Thank you for your prompt reply, could you direct me in the right direction for choosing a CPU, ram combination that would work well?

sure i need a bit more information though. what is your budget?
what components do you already have?
what is everything you will be using it for?
is it a desktop or laptop??

I'm sorry to have bothered you with this, but I haven't even bought any equipment yet. I just needed to know what to look for in a desktop. I'll just be using this new computer for virtualizations of operating systems, and for simple web browsing and word processing. My budget is between $500-$1000 depending on which computer I choose. I have heard that an Intel i5 would do the job just right, but that's why I came to the forum. I have only heard things. I do not know myself. Than you again.

ok sounds good and its no bother if i didn't enjoy doing this i wouldn't be on this site. i just have to ask the questions to see what exactly you need.

how about this build it will KILL most other setups visualizations.
CPU options- one x5677, x5690, or x5680. these cpus range from 4 cores to 6 cores. the x5677 and x5690 run at 3.46 ghz, and the x5680 runs at 3.33ghz. note you will have 8-12 cores with hyper threading enabled.

you could also run 2 on the same mobo for even more power. two x5677's should give much more power with a total of 16 cores.

mobo
dell t3500 mobo (one cpu)
hp z800 mobo (2 cpu's)(will be a bit more dificault to setup)

the t3500 mobo has 6 slots for ram and the hp z800 mobo has 12 slots. (note a standard atx mobo has 4)
