I'm using AMD R9 290 Sapphire Tri-X OC, and i just reinstall the windows, so i need to get on amd.com to download the driver, but you know, amd drivers suck. I downloaded the newest driver which is the version Catalyst 15.7.1 (i'm using windows 8). So after i install it, the graphics card is totally not working at all, so i have to uninstall it and download the autodetect version and it detected my graphics card and the version that work with my graphics card was Catalyst 14.4, but then it's not downloading that 14.4 driver, so i have to get on google and download it myself (typing every single character name of the Catalyst 14.4). Well that works. Also, i just downloaded CoD BO3 and it said that i need to install the newest driver for the game to run correctly. The question is: is the AMD R9 290 Sapphire Tri-X OC too old? And will i be fine with BO3 without installing the newest driver?

I'm planning on get an FX-8350 (i'm using FX-8320). I can only choose either getting an FX 8350 or a GTX 780 Refurbished (i want to play next-gen games). Please answer my question about the graphics card and help me solve my problem. Thanks

My R7 260x also works with 15.7.1.
Try this:
Use this http://www.guru3d.com/content-page/guru3d-driver-sweeper.html
And follow instruction :
Use the official uninstaller(s) of the driver(s) you want to uninstall.
Reboot your PC in Safe Mode.
Run Driver Sweeper and select what to clean.
Analyse lists all the entries possible to remove, cleaning removes the entries selected.
Reboot to normal mode.
Install fresh drivers.

Your card is not too old. The driver issue you are having baffles me a bit. My card is an R9 270 and I have the most current AMD Drivers, and have no issues. I do use ASUS, and I suppose that could be a difference, but your card is a good one and should run next-gen games without any real problems, generally speaking.

Driver Sweeper is outdated. It's been replaced by DDU, which is also mentioned in that link.

So make sure to use Display Driver Uninstaller.

This is likely to indeed solve your issues OP.

Gtx 780 is weaker than the 290, and the 290 should last you for a while for next gen games. It's not too old as a 390x is pretty much the same thing overclocked and the 390x was released a few months ago.

go to amd's drivers site and download the newest drivers for your card.

then go to device manager, and completely uninstall your graphics card, and make sure to check the box to include software drivers. (the card will be listed under display adapters)

after the uninstall, restart your computer and the card will reinstall itself with drivers, and then require a restart.

after restarting a second time, run your downloaded drivers from AMD, and you should be good to go.

I had to do a little reading on this, for Win8. Apparently there is a known issue where win8 isn't detecting your card properly, and it will cause gaming issues. The basic display adapter you are seeing, should actually be your video card. I am copy and pasting what appeared to be a fix, directly from Microsoft's website. They mention a Nvidia card, but several people with AMD's had the same issue on this thread.

Hello everyone THIS IS A WAY TO FIX OUR PEOBLEM. IT WORKED TO ME 100% AND I HOPE YOU ALL WILL SUCCEED.
first you will have to do this From the desktop:

Press the Windows key + X
Select Command Prompt (Admin)
Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and hit enter
Type Start DEVMGMT.MSC and hit enter

Once in Device Manager hit the View menu and select show hidden devices.

From here, remove each instance of the Nvidia card you see as well as each unknown device. Exit Device Manager and go to uninstall programs under control panel and uninstall anything there that is to do with your video card.

restart and Press the Windows key + X to go to device manager.

By now you should be able to see your video card shown there.

DO NOT REINSTALL THE LATEST DRIVER FROM YOUR COMPUTER.

right click on the video card in device manager and update the video card from there. Let windows do it for you even if you have it downloaded on your computer.

I've done all of that and it worked perfectly even after few restarts.

I HOPE YOU WILL HAVE THE SAME RESULTS AS ME. GOOD LUCK

If that is not a solution for you, try this:

go to device manager and check your 'processors' and see if one of the cores is marked as an issue ( ! ). If so, uninstall it, either scan for hardware changes or do a reboot. This is probably easier to try first than the above option, but I just found it in forums :p

well, not the processor either. yunno what, f*ck AMD, i'll manage some how to get a GTX 780, even if it's weaker a little bit, or else, i'll just use version 14.4 for the rest of my life if i have to... this is one of a reason y i hate AMD

I know it sucks, but you're actually experiencing an issue with Win8. that card is a good one. Im not sure if it's faulty, but it's got great performance for gaming. What it all comes down to is, Win8 is not detecting your hardware properly, and its causing drivers to not work properly. Nvidia users have had the exact same issue on Win8.

well, it's detecting my graphics card, but only with driver version 14.4, i couldn't upgrade to 15.7.1. so yeah, screw AMD, man. as long as version 14.4 allow me to play some big bad games like assassin's creed syndicate or some sort of games require gtx 780, it'd be fine

I may be late on this but the best way to run amd cards it to only install the graphic driver and audio driver. Aka no catalyst control ect. Usually catalyst creates problems with windows or your card.
