Is there a need or benefit for "Material Remover and Surface Purifier" when applying thermal paste?

I just decide to go with Phobya HeGrease Extreme High-Performance Thermal Compound on my heatsink. I am running extreme temps and think this is the best bang from my buck from what I have read around here.

What I saw at the bottom of the page was "Material Remover and Surface Purifier" by Arcticlean. I was wondering if this stuff is really need or just a "gimmicky" product.

It may help dissolve old really stuck on thermal paste, can't say as I've never used it. Rubbing alcohol works extremely well and has other uses around the house as an antiseptic. Places like walmart, walgreens or other pharmacies, just about any store has it. $2 for 473ml vs $8 for 30ml of arcticlean.

As for the thermal compound, there's not a lot of difference between them. Notice where some like prolimatech pk-1 and arctic mx-2 fall in this chart.

Then have a look at a comparison done with phobya hegrease extreme here.

Arctic mx-4 falls between the two...

there's a benefit, but it's gimmicky because there are cheaper alternatives that works just the same. i.e 99% medical alcohol, non-perfumized nail polish cleaner, acetone. basicly any liquid that's 99% alcohol.

Arctic mx-4 falls between the two roughly where the phobya lands in the skinneelabs tests and it matters very little as they're not even 1c temp difference from one another. That phobya paste is $13 for 3.5g and the mx-4 is less than $8 for 4g.

No need for a little spatula to spread it either, just use a small pea sized dab, thin vertical line or thin "X" shape (don't go all the way to the corners) and when the heatsink is mounted to the cpu it will spread just fine.
