My old XP pc is still running well and I use it for a lot of offline work.It only has one HD and I was going to install a second but upon looking inside I see the ribbon cable from the motherboard runs to my HD then to my optical drive, there is a second blue slot on my motherboard next to the one that feeds my HD and optical drives. Can I use another ribbon to connect my optical drive and use the existing one to connect my two HD's, the master on the end and the slave in the middle If so do I plug the optical drive into the end of the cable not the middle?.

Yes you can add up to two more PATA devices using the other, unused, PATA connection on your motherboard.

I may suggest to leave ribbon 1 as is, and install the other hard drive on it's own ribbon and designate that master, all by it's lonesome.
