Hello guys,

Well, I'm upgrading my whole gig in parts and I'm looking for a new GPU.
I'm moving from a Phenom II X4 + GTX460 gig and I want to know if my CPU will bottleneck performance of the graphics card.
I know a 955 won't extract the better performance of a GTX970, but what should I upgrade first then? Should I upgrade to a new processor and stay with my GTX460 a little bit more or should I go for a GTX 970?
Which one would give me better performance for now, since I can't upgrade both right now?

I mostly play CSGO and racing games for now, but I'm looking forward to play some new and future games now, so... yeah..

Well bottleneck is a relative term, so it's apart of the deneb family of phenom processors at 2009. It is a quad core so i doubt their'd be much of a problem their. But i don't know much about amd optimization as compared to an intel cpu. What i do know however is obviously if you go with a newer cpu you will see a dramatic boost in fps, but i don't think theirs necessarily a bottle neck so much a limitation in technology to the time period and considering its a 4 core cpu at 3.2ghz you should be fine. I'm running an i7 870 on a 980 ti for reference and though i will see a boost in fps whenever my 6700k gets here, it's not going to be something massive, and you should get stable frames with a 970 i would imagine, though i've never personally owned any amd chips so i can't say if the fps difference will be massive or not. But i could be wrong maybe wait for other's to chime in.

But for reference again my cpu's from 2010's lynnfield its a quad core at 2.93 base clock and i'm getting stable 60fps or higher in most games and about 3.2 ghz average with boost enabled. If i'm able to get decent stable frames with that i don't think you'll be getting any major issues with your set up.

And i'd upgrade the 970 over a cpu if you're looking for pure fps gains.

I'm running it @stock with its 3.2GHz. I'm cooling it with Xigmatek Loki II. Is it worth overclocking?

@fudgecakes99
Thanks for the advice. But, isn't a i7 870 still a powerfull cpu? You know, I think it's better than a 955, even both being quad-core processors. I think going from a GTX460 to a GTX 970 would get a huge fps boost, but I'm wondering if my cpu would hold it, making the upgrade pointless.

Those are just my two cents i'm not deeply informed on amd cpu's/ apu's in particular, maybe theirs a big difference software side, in which case maybe just jump ship from a phenom to an ivy bridge? Knowing that a lot of people are going to be hawking their old chips in favor of the new 6700k you should get a pretty nice discount on a really nice chip.

Well, I have considered jumping to Intel side but I don't have problems with AMD, and I like their prices. The best Intel side I can afford is a i7-4790, which is way more expensive than a Black Edition FX 8370E. Considering I would need to get a new mobo for both. Also, I use 4x4GB HyperX ram and isn't i7s triple channel?

I work with 3D and video rendering as well, what would give me a best shot?
