Hello ,
my WD 320gb external HDD isnt being recognized:
i have tried changing the cables, changing pc's, using different usb ports, removing extra usb devices, removing the UPS, checking disk management, and so on.
i can hear the disk power up,,spin,,,the heads move, and after 5-10 seconds, all is silent.
is it the PCB????????

thanks ,
nick

Hi there nikospc,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your external drive. :(
You've done some extensive troubleshooting. Though, you can't really be sure whether PCB is causing this. At this point, and in case the data stored on the drive is really important, I would say that your safest bet for recovering it is to contact a data recovery company.
It seems that the USB 3.0 interface is directly soldered. What is the model of the drive? It is possible that the model that you have is hardware encrypted(you can't retrieve the data unless the drive is in the enclosure).

In case you decide to go with swapping the PCB, my advise would be to open up another more specific thread on that. :)
