Is my GA-F2A88XM-DS2 motherboard compatible with an AMD X4 860k CPU? I don't know much about these things so any help would be much appreciated.

Quite likely needs a bios update - if you don't gave it yet I tend to point people to this Asus board instead as it supports the 860k out of the box.

I unfortunately already have the motherboard... What is the best CPU I can get without needing a BIOS update? :/

For a straight CPU (not an apu) its predecessor the 760k.

I assume you just bought the board then & have no CPU at present??

I had an AMD A8-5600 Series cpu but it failed on me...I don't really wan to change motherboards.
