Hard Drive Crashed; Re-installing Windows

Hello,

I have an ASUS Q500A laptop which I bought about two years ago. It came pre-installed with Windows 8.0 (not 8.1). Last week, the original hard drive in the computer crashed (I kept getting the Automatic Repair loop and could do nothing to get past it). So I purchased a new hard drive. Now I am trying to re-install Windows on the same computer with the new hard drive.

Unfortunately, I have NO installation disk (as ASUS seems to not provide those). I did NOT create a recovery disk when my computer was still in working condition and cannot boot the computer on that old hard drive. In addition, I have NO backup (long story short, I backed up with Acronis but backed up in increments instead of doing a full backup, rendering what I have worthless).

I know this question has been asked a lot, and I have searched multiple places all over the internet but would like a straight answer. Is my only hope to purchase a new copy of Windows? I do not have access to the product key, as those are apparently embedded and encrypted in the Bios now. It is not on the back of the computer or on the back of the battery, etc. I have read online where ASUS support refuses to give you a product key (have not tried myself), which boggles my mind especially since they will not provide a re-installation disk.

If repurchasing Windows is my only hope, fine. Obviously I'm upset but have obviously learned a lesson to make several backups in case something like this happens again.

Thanks for your help!

Solution
Yes, a new OS is your only option now. (As a last resort, try Asus support).

Please backup to an external disk after you install the new OS.

Alright, thank you for your response. ASUS was unfortunately no help, saying I needed to purchase a new copy from Microsoft as well.

I know this has also been asked a lot, but would you recommend purchasing the OEM or full version of Windows 8? And I do not see retail copies of Windows 8.0 anymore, only 8.1, so I hope this works. (Again, the computer came pre-installed with Windows 8.0 since 8.1 was not out yet.) And hopefully I'll be able to upgrade to Windows 10 sometime in the future.

I buy OEM versions of Windows, and I suggest you do the same. And look for either Win 10 or Win 6.1; whichever is less expensive. Win 8.1 can be upgraded free of charge to Win 10. This will not be a problem with a new build with the most recent hardware.

Some of the older computers (off the shelf) do not have Win 10 drivers released, and these computers may not be upgradeable to Win 10. Please check with the computer manufacturer.

Thanks for your help! I had actually upgraded my computer to Windows 10 before the hard drive crashed, so hopefully I will be able to do the same for free after I buy Windows 8.1 again.

If it ran well when you upgraded to Win 10, then chances are that it will run well when you install Win 8.1 and then upgrade to Win 10. Just keep in mind that Win 10 is still new and bugs are still being worked out. This is not necessarily a drawback of the computer.
