As the title suggests, I can go for 2 options. I currently have a GTX 970 STRIX right now and can sell it to get the GTX 980ti STRIX. However, which option should I go for? I use the build mainly for gaming. The CPU probably will be the I7-6700k and MOBO will be Maximus VIII hero.

You already have the card?
Always go for the best single card when you first build your system! (Not when you upgrade)
Buying a second gtx 970 will increase your performance to the level of the 980 ti non reference when overclocked or a titan x overclocked but will cost mutch less
Selling your card and buying a 980 ti is too much hassle time and you will also loose money by it
I think the best solution would be to keep your card and wait for pascal or volta cards if you are patient
If not go sli it will save you from a lot headache you will have more money in your pocket and the performance will be very similar

If you wouldnt have the card i would def say go for the 980 ti rather than starting off with sli but thats not the case
I have owned both sli 970 and 980ti. The 980ti performs very closely to sli when overclocked and performs better in certain games that exceed 3.5 gb of vram. The performance is too close for you to choose the 970 sli and put up with the extra power consumption, heat, and compatible issues with some games.
