Possibly faulty RAM?

I currently have 2x 4GB sticks of corsair vengeance RAM in my computer. My friend gave me a 1x 8GB stick of RAM from his old desktop. When I put it in according to the motherboard manual my computer doesn't POST. My motherboard is an Asus P8Z77-V and i have an i5 3570K. I am running Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. I would appreciate any and all ideas.

Solution
Try clearing the CMOS then start with the 8GB stick in slot 1 closest to the CPU, if it boots, (it should), go to BIOS and make sure it's set correctly, the DRAM, raise the DRAM voltage 0.05, so if 1.5 sticks, set to 1.55, save exit, shutdown, add the 2x4GB in channel B ((slots 3-4 from CPU) and give it a try. This puts 8GB in each channel and Intel's Flex mode will run all 16GB in dual channel mode

Mixing sticks from different manufacturers and/or different timings/size often plainly doesn't work.

If you really want more ram, either buy 2 more sticks of the exact same model/size as you currently use (be aware that this could still lead to problems, although it's not *that* likely), or get a new 16GB kit and sell your old memory.

It`s very simple.
If you have two sticks of memory each with a 4GB memory capacity.
The the motherboards memory controller defaults to dual channel memory mode.
If you add a Third stick of memory into any of the two memory slots still free, you are creating a a situation where the memory controller of the motherboard has a conflict in the type of memory mode it must detect and set in the bios of the motherboard.

Single channel memory mode/ or dual channel memory mode.
If the 8GB memory stick runs at the same speed and timing settings as your two 4GB memory modules.
You will have to consult your manual that came with the motherboard to find out where each memory modul should be placed out of the four memory slots of the board to force it to default to single channel memory mode.
Or you can look in the bios and see if there is an option or setting to manual select what mode the memory controller of your mother board should be set to for 3 sticks of memory setup.

You do need to look at the manual because most motherboards have a requisite of where each of the three memory sticks must be placed out of the four memory slots that are available to you, to enable or force the board into single channel memory operation mode.

The 8gb memory stick should work then and let the motherboard post ok.
