How to access data from an external hard drive that doesn't show up in file explorer?

I just finished assembling my new computer, and I am now at the point where I want to migrate all of my music/videos/photos from my old Macbook Pro onto my new machine running Windows 8.1. I transferred the ~40 gbs worth of stuff onto an old 300gb external hard drive (which has been used almost exclusively with Macs if that makes a difference) and I just want to transfer the media over to my new hard drive.

In Disk Management, I can see the drive but the option to give it a drive letter is grayed out. I also cannot open or format it. The only thing I can do is delete, but that would defeat the point of using the external drive to migrate my files.
Finally, if I click on the name of the drive I can change it into a dynamic disk, but I have no idea if that'll work or keep by data on the drive.

Any help is much appreciated

It sounds like it using a filesystem that windows will not read without a helper utility. You can look into using a utility like HFSExplorer or you can reformat the harddrive to either FAT or NTFS, copy the data from your mac again and then copy to your PC.
