worth it to sell 3 monitors and get a 1440p or higher or gaming monitor

Hi I currently have a gtx 970 and 3 hp 2511x monitors. Current games like shadow of mordor and GTA V requires me to go 1080p to have it on ultra, which is why I'm currently thinking of selling my 3 1080p monitors and get either 1440p or a gaming monitor (with g sync). I don't know which are good, so any inputs are welcomed. What would be the best route to go on with today's displays? Thanks!

Those new 21:9 monitors would be a nice replacement for 3 monitors. Especially the curved ones.
I recently saw one in person and its MUCH cooler than having 3 monitors. There are 1080p ones and 1440p ones.

Yes but they cost a ton, I would like something in the range of about $600 since I would be selling my monitors for about $450.

I think it's worth upgrading from three 1080p monitors to one 1440p monitor with g-sync.

Best upgrade path:

1080p -> 1440p (Acer XB270HU)

OR

1080p -> 1440p ultrawide (3440 x 1440) (Acer XR341CKA)

* I just upgraded to a 1440p vertical resolution last week and games like GTA 5 look so much better. The faces of the characters look more realistic. My monitor isn't even g-sync, but I'm sure that's even better. Below is a very good review of the Acer XB270HU. The display is amazing, but the bezel is horrible because of it's glossy finish. But the screen is much more important.

Going from triple head 1080p to 1440p means that you'll have about 2/3 as many pixels to render, so you'll see about a 50% FPS boost on 1440p. Perhaps you knew that already, though. I actually am on a 21:9 3440x1440 34" monitor myself (LG 34UM95-P) and I could never go back, but as you said It's expensive. I got a very good price on it at $750.

@mikedp5, when you purchase your new 1440p monitor, be sure to keep the box and the packing materials in your closet. That way if you one day decide to upgrade from 1440p to 3440 x 1440, you'll have an easier time of selling it to upgrade. That's what I did.

By the way, I purchased a Dell UltraSharp U3415W for $699.99 from Amazon.com. The price momentarily went down from $830 to $699.99 for a few hours and I grabbed one. My dream monitor is the Acer XR341CKA because it's that resolution but with 100Hz g-sync. It's supposed to come out in September, and the price will probably be high; $1,200 perhaps?

Whatever you end up doing, I hope that you have a great experience.

Hi Mike,

I sold 3 x 24" 1080p IPS panels which i used for nvidia surround gaming with 2 x GTX 970's - i bought 980ti and a 4k gsync monitor.

It is rumoured that free-sync will be the variable refresh rate standard as it is to be backed by intel i believe, thus making gysnc redundant - potentially!

for 1440p gaming a single 970 will perform well - it just depends on what games you play. If you go for 144hz monitor then gsync or free sync almost becomes redundant if you crank up your settings to ultra as you will struggle to achieve > 144 fps on a single 970.

In your situation i would simply buy a 24" - 28" 1440p 144 fixed refresh rate monitor such as:

Acer Predator XB270H 27" 144hz

or

BenQ XL2730Z 27" WQHD Resolution with 144Hz

or

Asus VG278HE 27" 144hz#

would the productivity abilities still be there on 1440p monitor? I have never seen a 1440p monitor personally, so I don't know if I could do a lot on that screen size.

also guys, is there a difference between,

1. regular monitor running >60 fps vs gsync monitor with 60hz? assuming I can't reach 144 fps on single gtx 970, and

why would I still get Gsync or freesync if I won't reach 144fps? Is it a requirement to reach 144fps to enjoy 144hz gsync monitors? Sorry for being noob.

Productivity, 3 separate monitors is always the best below is a picture to illustrate how much extra space you gain.

G/Free/sync synchronises your display refresh rates to the GPU therefore eliminating screen tearing and minimizing display stutter and input lag.

It solves two problems;

If your GPU is rendering more frames than the monitor can show, this causes 'tearing' - g/freesync resolves this by making them work in tandom.

You can enable 'v-sync' but this causes stuttering and lag.

g/freesync fixes these issues.

i think g/freesync works between 30 fps upto 144fps, so if you have a 60hz monitor and you are rendering at 150fps g/freesync will make your GPU render at 60fps.

Everyone's loving Acers IPS 2k G-sync. I have a G-sync monitor and the motion clarity and colors were a huge upgrade over my old 60hz.

Note: You always want high fps G-sync or not especially minimum fps. G-sync starts to really look smooth at 65+. It does help with fps drops to 45 or so which is nice but you don't want to be that low often.

G sync really only helps with a 144hz monitor or say a 100hz monitor and you aren't able to get to that refresh rate with your fps. Then it syncs refresh rate to output fps so you don't get tearing or stutter or anything from adaptive vsync.

If you have a 60 hz monitor, g sync would only come in handy if you are a lot of the time under 60fps...say 4K and you constantly get 40-50 fps, then it helps but if you have a 60 hz gsync and are pushing 100FPS it wont help any tearing above your refresh rate.
