Sorry for the long post.

I want to connect three monitors to my PC, I've only been successful in getting two to work. Should the 7850 be able to support three? If so, what combination of cables/ports should I try.

Hardware - AMD Radeon 7850 - outputs DVI, HDMI and 2 x display ports. Also what I assume to be an expansion plate connected to the 7850 with one DVI port.

3 x monitors...
BenQ GL2460 with DVI and VGA ports
Acer S240HL with DVI, HDMI and VGA
Dell 1907FPt with DVI and VGA

The Acer is connected from its HDMI port to the HDMI on the 7850 and works fine (but see note 3)

The BenQ is connected from its DVI port to the DVI on the expansion plate and works fine. It also works when connected to the DVI port on the 7850

Before I bought the Acer, the Dell was my second monitor and it was connected using a VGA cable from its VGA port plugged in (via an adapter) to the DVI on the 7850. (Why it's connected like that I forget, probably the only cable/adapter combination I had available.). Windows 8.1 detects this as a 3rd monitor but If I try and extend the desktop to it it says something like 'Unable to save changes, choose a different config combination' when applying the settings.

Note 1 the Dell hasn't and doesn't display anything if it's connected into the expansion plate, even if it's the sole monitor.

Note 2 I'm referring to it as an expansion plate because i can't think what else it would be. Device manager only lists one graphics adapter, and shows both working displays being connected to the 7850

Note 3 I say works fine, however when Windows is asked to identify the monitors, it flashes up 1 on the Acer even though it thinks that 1 is the BenQ and vice versa, not that it seems to cause a problem for me but it might be relevant.

Right, so I've now had time to do some more digging...

I know the answer to my original question is that the 7850 will support more than 3 monitors if certain conditions are met. Since my original post, I believe I have met those conditions, so let me ask the question in a modified form.

Question. I have 3 monitors which I'm trying to connect to an XFX variant AMD Radeon 7850. From reading the documentation I believe that if I connect 2 monitors to "legacy" interfaces and a 3rd to a mini-Display Port it should work.

So here is what I have now got configured...

BenQ GL2460 with DVI port connected to DVI on the 7850
Acer S240HL with HDMI port connected to the HDMI on the 7850
Dell 1907FPt with DVI port connected via an adapter to one of the mini-Display Port sockets on the 7850

(I've also tried every other combination possible to me, including the Acer HDMI going into a mini-Display Port via an adapter I've since returned to the local shop).

However the outcome is still the same, i.e. every monitor works individually, every combination of 2 of the monitors works ok. But when I add the 3rd, I get the same Windows 8.1 Unable to save changes, choose a different config combination' when applying the settings.

A couple of notes...

1. Yes, I have tried reducing the resolutions of the BenQ and Acer monitors to the lowest possible settings so the older Dell isn't being forced to a resolution higher than it can manage. No success.

2. I'm now aware that my card is an XFX which has an extra DVI , not an expansion plate. I hadn't realised that what I thought was just a pattern in the ventilation holes actually spelled out XFX when reading it from above :)

Sorry for a late response. I have the 7950 and I tried the DVI, DVI, HDMI route with no sucess, but you can get an ACTIVE mini display port to DVI adapter and it will work fine or get a monitor with DP, which luckily one of my monitors had.

The problem us weird, but cam be solved for a little money. Just make sure your adapter is ACTIVE and not passive otherwise it won't work. I also vaguely remember that you can get a adapter from HDMI to DVI that is active and it will still work. If it is cheaper then you might aswell try.
