Hello everyone,

I am having issues getting Windows 7 to detect an external laptop HDD connected using a USB/SATA adapter. I purchased a generic USB/SATA adapter. I inserted a Hitachi 120gb HDD from my wife's old Dell XPS. I have the adapter connected to a USB port on my Lenovo laptop, and connected to a power source with a Y adapter. When I plug the USB cable into my laptop, I can hear the external HDD spin up and a red light on the adapter comes on. However, my laptop doesn't detect the external HDD. It doesn't show up in devices, and it doesn't show up in disk management.

Does anyone know why Windows is failing to detect the external drive? Thanks.

Hey there, CrossFaded513.

Was the drive working properly before you've decided connect it externally via a SATA to USB adapter? Try it with a different computer or and with a SATA connection if possible, to see if it's properly recognized. You could also try a different drive with the same adapter, to determine if the issue reoccurs. Check if you need drivers for the adapter to run properly. You could also try accessing the HDD via Ubuntu Live DVD/USB, to see if it's properly recognized and if you can get to your data, or try some of the data recovery programs from this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html.

Please let me know how everything goes.
