Hi Everyone

I am thinking about adding another GPU to my setup. My relevant specs are:

Intel Core i7 3770k @ 4.5 Ghz
Asus Maximus V Gene
Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 680 OC (It is the OC card, I did not overclock it any further)

The reason I mention the CPU is because it is being cooled by an Corsair h100i, so there is no additional air cooler causing extra heat inside the case or an space issue between the CPU and GPU.

Now my question is: The motherboard does support SLI, but the gap is quite small and I am afraid of the extra heat that will be generated by the extra card. I live in a relatively hot area.

Is it safe to add another GTX 680 OC card in SLI on such a small motherboard or will it cause excessive heating of the top card?

Solution
well, but then you are making the fan work harder, as you are foxing air back into the heat sink as well. and since the heat sink has more surface area on the side, you get less cooling.

My case is a Corsair Graphite 600t. I have a Corsair AF 120mm exhaust at the back, the 2 fans pulling air out of the case through the radiator at the top, a 200mm fan in the front as intake and a 230 mm fan in the side panel blowing air onto the graphics card. Do you think that my air cooling solution will be able to keep a GTX 680 under full load at normal temps in such a confined space? Think there will be a few mm between the two cards.

That card seems to have lots of fans, the top card will indeed get warmer, but I do not think it should be come too much of a issue. also have you considered making that side 230 a suction fan? When I used to air cool I found that sucking hot air from the graphics cards seemed more effective than blowing in cold air.

That is interesting, i thought the extra air being blown onto the cards heat sink would benefit it more that sucking air away from it. So you reckon I can SLI these 2 cards due to the fact that they each have 3 fans and an exposed heat sink to the side panel?

I quickly checked now, the Gigabyte GTX 680 sucks air in, blowing it over the heat sinks, would it not be better to blow air in between the cards to help it get cooler air to blow over the heat sinks?

It might be, but the fact remains that you did answer my primary question, the logistics of figuring out how to generate the least amount of heat I will experiment with.

Thank you very much for the help! :)

That would be the ideal option, but I can pick up the GTX 680 for 200$, in my country a GTX 970 goes for about 500$. And according to Toms Hardware Graphics card hierarchy chart you should jump at least 2 tiers. This puts me at a GTX 980, which costs 900$ in my country.

Your absolutely right that a single card would do the trick, but I cant afford those cards :(
