Looking to upgrade my card and wondering which would have the best performance for the best price.

My computer specs are as followed:

intel i5-3570
amd 7870
700w ps

I was looking at benchmarks for the gtx 970 and it seems pretty good overall. I'm currently playing Dragon Age: Inquisition and will most likely be playing Witcher 3 in the near future and was wondering how the 970 holds up against those at full settings and how future proof the card would be.

Hello

Building a computer is like building a chain, it is only as strong as its weakest link. I agree that the 980 ti is going to be overkill for your PC. You want something that is going to work well with the rest of your PC. I would recommend a GTX 970 with that build. It wont run the game at max settings at 1080p, but you will get pretty close. If you have some extra cash to drop and plan on upgrading the rest of the PC later on, you can also opt for a GTX 980. Only thing I have against that card is that I feel it is still too expensive (at least in my part of the world) compared to the GTX 980 ti, which outperforms it around every turn.

Hope this helps :D

cant do full settings at playable frame rates with a gtx 970.

high/very high with some tweaking

you would need a gtx 980 ti to max settings with playable frame rates at 1080p

Hmm a 980 ti is way above my price range. Hell it costs almost as much as my entire build right now.

Is there any card $500~ that can handle those games at 50-60~ fps at near full settings?

r9 390/X are just rebrands of R9 290/X with factory OC and more vram which you dont need on 1080p, If you OC GTX 970 which has very good OC potential it would do better than r9 390/X which you cant OC very much AMD OC to the limit through the years

I'm sory but the 970 runs everything maxed out with +60FPS (on witcher 3, you just have to put some "Nvidia Hair" option, which i assume is the hair rendering, in the middle..... but then again, its just hair lol).

The only game I couldn't run maxed out was Ark Evolved, the dinosaur game. But I think everyone knows the problems that game has, so I won't even go there.

My card is the Gigabyte G1, already out of the box with a high clock, and with enormous potential for even further OC.

So if you are in doubt regarding that card, don't be. It's a hell of a mean machine, and will eat anything you throw at it. I play in 1080p with a 144Hz monitor, and it really feels the difference of playing above 75fps.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I think i'll be looking into the 970 or 980 but definitely will be looking for deals on them. With the holiday seasons coming up i will most likely hold out until then.
