after a hard drive packs up it's usually pretty simple to do a clean windows install to the new drive but not on this machine
i've not worked on a dell machine before and it seems half the bios was stored on the old hard drive- i wonder what genius thought that up!
the machine is so old theres no rescue disk or anything like it but there are obviously missing drivers for the cd rom drive and usb.
ive managed to create a boot sector with partition manager from an old floppy -but thats it,
while the cd spins up for 10 or 20 seconds it wont load xp, win 98, or even dos it just reverts back to F1 reboot f2 setup bios
re using the old hard drive is out as its failure is terminal.
the new hard drive is ok in bios, and the rest of the bios looks ok too. only question what is the bios entry 'OS install mode- whats that all about? is it write protecting the bios or the hard drive?
any suggestions would be helpful
thanks jack
