Gigabyte Z87 cannot use 4 chips...Will G.Skill F3-2400C10D-8GTX work in an Z97 motherboard?

Hi Everyone,

This may be a really dumb question, but I cant seem to get a definite answer on google.

I have 4 of these: (4 x 4 gig sticks) G.Skill F3-2400C10D-8GTX Trident X 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3-2400MHz 1.65V CL10 Dual Channel Desktop Memory

I see on the gskill website it says it is fine for a Z87 motherboard, which is what I currently have.
I have the Gigabyte Z87UD5H. I would like to get a Z97 board....would these RAM modules work in the new Z97 board? This is why...

Why am I going for a new motherboard? Well because I got caught with the issue of gigabyte Z87 motherboards not being able to use 4 modules of ram. I have had 2 x 4gig for about 2 years, I just last week decided to get another 2 as there was a special on. I recieved the ram, popped them into my motherboard to fill all four slots...and now the pc wont boot. I googled the problem and found this to my horror: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php?topic=13267.0 Seems there are thousands of people who have the problem of not being able to use all 4 slots on the motherboard....the google results are endless.

I would never have bought a gigabyte board if I knew they could not handle 4 chips of ram....I'm not a computer expert. So now its either a new board, or wasting 4 chips of trident X and getting 2 x 8 gig. I just also got a Gigabyte GTX980Ti.....If I knew about this 2 weeks ago, I would not have bought a gigabyte but rather an Asus or something....

Thank you for your help. Have an awesome day.

Solution
Only modules that are guarantied to run together is the ones from a matched set of 4. Even with 2 sets of the same model bought 2 years apart there may be issues because of slight differences.
So what Have you tried? Upgraded to latest BIOS? Resetting BIOS with all 4 in? Tried both sets individually? Tried mixing one stick with another from the other set?

Hi Seantheworld

Yes the ram should work on a Z97. I think the only reason that the Z97 is not on the list is because those chipsets did not exist when the RAM was released. I am running an Asus motherboard with all 4 slots filled and having no problems. Gigabyte Graphics cards are not bad at all in general. It sound more like you have one of those bad apples, but in general Gigabyte makes decent products.

If you want to be 100% sure before you buy a board. Most manufacturers have a memory support list, usually under the support section of the motherboard. This is just in general and just because some brand of RAM is not on the list does not mean that it wont work. As mentioned before, I am using all 4 slots on my motherboard and the RAM I am using was no on that supported list and I have no problems with it.

Hope this helps :D

Mixing new and old memory, even of the same brand, model and capacity, is never guaranteed to work. That is why they sell kits of 2 sticks or kits of 4 sticks of memory. They have already been tested to know that they will work together.

I would seriously question that if the memory is not working on a Z87 motherboard that it would somehow magically work on a Z97 motherboard. I would expect them to both have the same issues with the same memory.

You would be far better off buying a 2x 8GB memory kit for your Z87 motherboard, and selling your current memory. You end up spending a lot less money too.

I don't think the problem was with Z87 board in general, think it was just his board. If your going to be mixing memory, I have never had any problems mixing memory form the same brand, size and speed. I am running 2 x(8x2) memory configuration with no problems. If you are going to mix brands, speeds and sizes you are going to have a bad time.

Thanks for your input guys. I managed to sort out the problem.

Like Rolli59 said, I tried using an "old" chip with a "new" one. My PC ran just fine. I then updated the bios to ver.10 beta. Gigabyte update app only showed ver.9 as the latest. I had to download it from gigabytes website and manually choose the update file. I then took a min and closed my eyes and asked God to help with me as I really dont have time to strip my PC and have my motherboard go in for weeks under warranty etc etc etc.... Put in all 4 chips booted up and it worked 100%. Talk about a sigh of relief. To make things interesting I did 3 benchmarks to see what the difference is:

8 Gigs Trident X at default settings:

16 Gigs Trident X at default settings:
