Want 15" display and budget around $2k for a medical student. Need reliable, efficient unit with excellent display. Are Lonovo Thinkpad W550 and Asus Zenboo Pro UX501 good options.

Yes, not much out there more bulletproof than a ThinkPad. W550s http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/w-series/w550s/?sb=:00000025:00003AF7:

If you have good eyesight and don't mind the smaller text, the upgrade to the 3k IPS screen may be worth it, a good screen is very good to have.

Also the upgrade to 8 gig is good as is the SSD option.

With screen, 8 gig and 256 ssd it's 1,700. While a bit more than what you'd pay for your own RAM and solid state upgrade, it comes with the warranty for the system and also you don't have to mess with re-installing Windows on the drive.
