Dell Optiplex 380 SFF (Small Form Factor) - Has anyone tried to swap out the CD/DVD with its SATA connectors and use them for a new SSD in the 2.5 " bay? If feasible, then I would transfer the OS to the SSD from the original HDD.

Solution
Your idea does not work, because the PSU has only 1X sata power cable for the HDD, and other slim sata power cable for the DVD drive, which is not compatible with the regular sata port ( 15-pin).
You need to 1) buy the Y- sata cable like http://www.xtremehardware.com/images/stories/Phobya/Cavetteria_PHOBYA/012b.jpg 2) one sata data cable if you don't have one. 3) open the case connect the data and one of the sata power cable to the SSD( the optiplex 380 SFF has 3x sata ports), then connect the ssd into one of sata port. And now you can use the software to clone the OS into the SSD, make sure all the sata ports are enable in the BIOS too. After done the cloning, switch to the SSD, yor are set to boot by the ssd.

Some of the SSD will come with the cloning software, if it don't have, check the hdd, if it is WD, using Acronis True Image WD Edition http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en If it is the Seagate using DiscWizard other seagate acronis version http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/item/discwizard-master-dl/
