Can you take a picture of the stick of RAM in question and show us? Perhaps we just don't get it, but I've never heard (or read) of a single stick that was labeled as 8(2x4).

what operating system are you using? is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

EDIT: never mind, I misread your post. you are showing 8 when you should be getting 12. swap the sticks around to see if you have a bad stick,

Ok i'll try switching the ram, is it possible to get 12gb installed and working? I remember someone telling me that you could only have either 4GB-8GB or 16GB and that 8gb + 4gb isnt possible

The total RAM is only limited by the top end. Most mobo and processors have groups of 2 or 4, though sometimes 3. You just get a speed boost from using the groups, but you should be able to use whatever slots and however many slots you have up to your max. The mobo manual should also cover how to use, where to put, and how many RAM DIMMs to use.

I did that already I put my 2x4 gb and got 4gb ram I removed my 2x4 gb and put my only 4gb stick and I got 4gb. It's like my 2x4gb is only giving half of what it got, like it was locked somehow.

I have put my RAM like they say in my mobo manual which is first stick in DIMM_A2 and 2nd stick in DIMM_B2 then extra sticks in DIMM_A1 and DIMM_B2...

I have put my 2x4 gb stick alone in the DIMM_A2 and it was only showing 4gb installed. I removed this one and inserted my 4gb stick and got 4gb... I dont know what else to try but I remember reading somewhere that you could unlock the ram. I remember trying it on my old system but it never worked, I tried looking on google to try it again but I cant find where to do it on windows 10.. I guess i'll just let it at 8gb

Hi

I is strange you have a single memory stick described as a 2 x 4 GB stick of DDR ram

I would expect a single stick to be described as a 4 GB stick
Or a 8 GB KIT consisting of 2 x 4 GB sticks of ram

Is this a old computer using DDR ram ?
Or DDR-3 which is used by most recent PC's
Or DDR-4 or DDR-2 ?

Sounds like a bad stick. if you are putting an 8GB stick in and its only reading 4 then I cant think what else it would be except a defect in the chip. I would return it right away for a replacement. most places will let you exchange a defective item even if they dont allow returns on that item.
