Hi, I found a 290x on newegg for 259 dollars on sale, but r9 390 costs 320+. What is the difference? Also, just a side question, should I get a 290x/390 and wait for pascal or the next amd series, or just buy a 980 ti/fury x and upgrade in 2-3 years? I plan on gaming in 1440p once I get a monitor. Thanks for any replies.

The 290X and 390X are the same card as are the 290 and 390. They are direct rebrands with a slight factory overclock and an extra 4GB of VRAM that helps nothing. It is basically a marketing gimmick. So a 390 is slower than a 290X.

I went with a 980 Ti for my 1440p monitor. Don't have to worry about upgrades for a few years.

Who cares. We wont even see many native DX 12 games for a few years and even if DX 12 gives a performance boost the 980 Ti doesn't actually need one. It can max any game in existence at 1440p.

So I should get 980 ti instead of waiting for pascal with a 290x?

It's entirely up to you and your budget. If you can afford a 980 Ti it will not leave you wanting more at 1440p I can tell you that. You can always wait on something better. The question is do you like waiting or playing games right now ;)
