I am using an Asus monitor that has built in speakers that work fine but if I plug my headphones into the pc, it does not automatically switch to my headphones unless I manually set them to default by going to control panel--sound--click "speakers" (headphones) instead of the pre-selected asus monitor.. I also tried opening the Realtek HD Audio and tried setting the default in there but it does the same thing. Any help appreciated thanks!

What is your OS version ? Windows ? Linux ? Is it a desktop or a laptop ?
This "auto-switch" is usually observed when you are using a laptop, where the sound drivers are integrated and the OS (Windows) switch it for you.
I have never seen windows auto switching in a desktop.

It is a Windows 7 desktop. I built it myself a few weeks ago (first time) so desktops are new to me. I previously had a laptop with Windows 7 that does as you describe and switched automatically. Do desktops not do this? I have to manually change it each time I want to use my headphones? Not a huge problem if that is the case, more a minor inconvenience. Thanks!
