Extremely high ping issues, please help!

Hey, I'm hoping one of you guys could help me with this issue I've been having for a long time. I've always had issues with high ping spikes.

We pay for 18 megabits download and 0.5 megabits upload from our ISP in Canada called Tek Savvy.

I have 2 sisters constantly video-streaming from Netflix and me usually just playing a game +- someone else casually web browsing. However, I've noticed my issue to happen even if they are not streaming a video. It is totally random

I've had ping issues lasting from 1 minute to 10 minutes to most of the day in the 500's but recently, the past month or so it was become incredibly worse. My ping EVERY day at random times spikes to 1000-3000 and it can last from a couple seconds, 10 minutes or as long as a couple days.

A couple months ago, our ISP found a small problem with a modem, and we received a brand new one, but the issue continued. Also, I'd like to note this issue is with all our devices, not just my computer as well we are all connected wirelessly.

What I have done for testing

* Pinged www.google.com from the cmd to see these spikes occur. I then directly connected a laptop to the modem to see if the high ping issues went away, and they did indeed go away, my ping dropping to 10-20ms. Combined with the fact that the modem is brand new, I don't think it is the problem.

* I have replaced my router 3 times now, from a Linksys-Cisco e3000, to a WD My Net N900 Central to a brand new one I purchased 3 days ago, the Asus RT-AC55U. All 3 changes proved to be pointless. I have also replaced the ethernet cable with 2 other ones, both not being the problem.

* Directly connected my router to the wall socket instead of 2 extenders.

My modem and router are placed upstairs, about half a meter apart from each other, not surrounded by any thick walls /etc. Most of the connected devices are upstairs so I don't think the distance is an issue as well.

Hello end user! If the solution to your problem has not still not been found please try the following if you are using ANY type of virus protection software. For the fix and not the story scroll down.

- I first noticed the issue when I was playing an online game, my ping started spiking and would not go back down. At first I was 100% that I was either being DDOSd or I had some how managed to get malware.

Using "ping google.com -t" I was getting 176ms-600ms returns.

*I utilize 2 different security software clients*
-Malwarebytes Premium
-AVAST Premium

After confirming that my computer was not infected by anything Malicious I continued to monitor my network activity using AVAST. I began to notice immediately that AVAST...
You say you tested connecting to the modem and it works fine which means there is nothing wrong with your internet. That leave the router which you have replaced multiple times which pretty much leaves cabling which you say you replaced. You are now at the point of almost having to blame the PC except why would it work directly connected.

Still some of your comments make me thing you are testing this on a wireless connection. If that is true then your symptoms are exactly what you see when you are getting wireless interference.

Hi, I had a lot to write, so some of it might be unclear. I'll try and clear it up. This high ping issue occurs on every wirelessly connected device, phones, laptops, desktop PC's too. I have tried resetting both the modem and router multiple times, with no help. Next, I called my ISP which they had me connect my Ethernet cable from the modem to my laptop, which showed that the problem wasn't from the modem. I was also suspicious of my Ethernet cable itself so when I purchased my new Asus router, it came with a new cable which I used instead, connecting my modem to my router.

You would want to plug into the router with ethernet to be really sure it was only on the wireless.

Your problem is extremely common for wireless and the reason it is recommended you don't use it for games since games do not tolerate the random delays. Even in the best wireless you will get some random delays.

Pretty much the only thing you can do with wireless is to try to find some radio bandwidth that is uncontested. It tends to be very hard if you live in a densely populated area since all your neighbors routers as well as baby monitor, cordless phones, security cameras etc etc all are fighting over very limited bandwidth.

First thing to try since you have dual band router is try to use the 5g band rather than the 2.4g. There tends to be more channels on the 5g band and it does not cover as well. The poor coverage is good and bad it means the signals from outside your house have more issues getting in but it also mean you may not get enough signals though the floors/walls in use your own router.

All you can really do is try other channels selection. On the 2.4g band you can try 1,6,11. You want to change the router to use 20mhz channels otherwise it uses channels 1&6 or 6&11. On the 5g band you have many more to choose but those too you should try 20mhz.

The big problem is that all your neighbors are doing the same thing. The routers try to auto select the best bands but they are pretty stupid and your neighbor may move onto the channel you selected at some random time in the future.

Thanks again for the reply. I have always been using the dual band for it's advantages. On all 3 routers I had set up 2.4ghz and 5ghz. On the previous routers I used a network software to find the least used channels in each band. On this new router, I have yet to do so but I will follow your advice and change both bands to use 20 MHz.

In regards to testing it with the router directly connected to my laptop, I did try that once before with my ISP technician but I only tested it for a couple seconds in which I don't think I was under a high ping spike, so I will go ahead and test that again for a solid 10 minutes and see what I get.


Edit: I took off the auto channel function and set the 2ghz to channel 1 and the 5ghz to channel 157


 
It is a matter of trial and error until you get the best results. Hopefully you find a area you can use.

The newest Tri band 802.11ac routers have the ability to use 40mhz out of total 60mhz of 2.4g bandwidth and 160mhz out of a total 180mhz of 5g bandwidth. So if you have a pig of a neighbor running one of these he will stomp on everyone else. Of course that does not mean he too is not affected by interference he just causes lots more than your average person. If multiple people run these pretty much nobody get much of anything.

Using the process of elimination I was able to find out that a special security feature included with AVAST known as "Secure DNS" was causing my extremely high response times. After disabling just that one feature I have not had a problem.

-Use the process of elimination by disabling one feature at a time to find out if any of your security software features are causing the issue.
