Hi so I have been using Windows 10 pretty well for a couple of weeks now, but then yesterday the PC was restarting and updating but all of a sudden the electricity went out in my apartment. Now, everytime I start up my desktop, a blue screen comes up and it says something like "unmountable boot volume" and then it restarts and goes into system repair, but has been stuck on "diagnosing your pc" for a hell long time now so I force shut it down. I have tried so many different things, but nothing works. I have even tried to reinstall Windows 10, but it does not work on my hard drive, and at other times it says that my hard drive is "locked." I am really desperate here and I need some help quick because schools are starting and I need to do my work on my desktop!!!

I would look at this link: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-update/windows-crash-refresh-hard-drive-locked-unlock/a6bb04ff-5dba-4e10-a849-644cd0851bc6

This gives you a whole lot of solutions to try for now, if nothing works, then report back. This issue also happened to me before but I forgot how I solved it, all I remember doing is installing Linux (Ubuntu) and using G parted to FULLY format my HDD. That however shouldn't be the solution, it's just how I remembered doing it. You said system repair gets stuck, have you tried using command prompt on the disc, I don't remember what you type (sorry), but if someone else does remember, then that would be great. I would strongly recommend to look at the link provided above first.

EDIT: I just re-read your post the third time, "unmountable boot volume", seems about right. I did in fact use G parted on Linux but you can download just G parted here: http://gparted.org/livecd.php

This is also Linux but it just gives you G parted. It's also a live USB/CD, so you can use it without installing anything, just mount the ISO to the USB/CD. You can also use: http://www.partitionwizard.com/partition-wizard-bootable-cd.html

boot up with the windows installer disk. or boot using a hirem boot cd or usb device. go into dos prompt and with another usb stick copy your files over to another pc or pick up a sata to usb cable and plug your hard drive into a working pc and copy the data over then with diskpart or other 3 party disk tools format the hard drive or with the windows installer disk go into advance mode and remove all of the partions and then reboot. windows should then load onto your disk.

Thanks and I already tried most of the things that he had listed for Command Prompt, and even restarted my PC but nothing seemed to work at all. Also, I purchased a new HDD and was wondering if I could still access this corrupted HDD for my items?

Install windows on the new HDD, and see if it detects the HDD, if it does, then you could access those files. You could've formatted that HDD instead of buying a new one....

Yeah but funny thing is that I was kind of in need of a new HDD anyways, since there was not enough space left to download any games on this HDD, since its only 250 GB. I ordered myself a 2 TB HDD but thing is I can't format the HDD since it has a lot of important files that I need.

Sadly I only have 1 desktop and no other devices to connect the HDD to so I'm kinda stuck until my new HDD that I ordered can arrive.

You can use G parted to see if it detects the HDD at all. If it detects the HDD, then you can right click it and click on "check". This would check/troubleshoot your HDD. You will have to click on "apply operation" at the top. This should resolve the problem. Also, I suggest to go in the BIOS to see if your HDD is there, if not, then your HDD is gone, if it's there, then it's a software problem.

Ok so I tried to reinstall Windows 10 and the HDD came up when it asked where I wanted to install it. I selected it but then this sign came up that said: "Windows could not format partition on disk 0. The error occurred while preparing the partition selected for installation. Error: 0x80070057

boot of the installer disk again...when you see your drives go into advance mode and delete all the partions on all your drives if this is a new set up. when you let windows install itself some of the files are on the hard drive and some are on your ssd. you have to remove everything to make a clean install.

Yea, +1 above. The only thing you can do is to format the drive. Sorry, what important files are on there? Photos, Videos, Files, Programs (You paid for), your x-rated collection?

Sorry I'm kinda confused because there are three different partitions on my disk. One is a system reserve, one is the primary. and I forgot what the third one was. If u dont mind, could you give me the link to a video which could walk me through what you're saying? Thanks

Actually I just remembered that all of my stuff was backed up to OneDrive and other applications so I'm all good, and there are no x rated things on it lol. But when I tried to format it the drive/ partition twice now, nothing would happen but that pop up coming up. So now I booted it up from my USB again and went into Repair My Computer and went to Reset PC and pressed erase everything. I pressed Windows 10 as the target operating system (since it was the only one there) and it has been quite a long time now with the only thing showing a blue screen and it says "Getting things ready." I dont think it is working should I just try it again?

It does that, just wait it out, happened to me. Try to see if Linux installs properly. I suggest Linux mint or Ubuntu to install and see if it works. Windows 10 is also buggy, so that might happen. For now, wait it out and when your done waiting, I suggest installing Linux to see if it works.

Its actually been like 2 hours now since it has been saying "getting things ready" and it doesn't look like it plans on working wither. I'm just gonna wait it out until the morning and then try seeing if I can boot up my PC with gparted and have it check my PC out. But until my new HDD arrives I'm just gonna have to try all the solutions I can get. Thanks
