The title pretty much covers it: I've been putting up with these random crashes for maybe a year or more (computer is around 2-3 years old now). I've since bought a new video card and had the same issue and recently completely reformatted my harddrive

The games that have been crashing run the gamut from Just Cause 2, to X-Com (the new one), to MGSV and even low-intensity stuff like Darkest Dungeon. The crash is pretty much always to desktop (with the odd hard lock), but can happen anywhere between 5 min or 5 hours of starting the game in question.

This is really bumming me out and I believe it's likely a hardware problem, since it's happening across lots of different types of games and remains an issue even after a total scrub-down of my harddrive.

System specs:
Processor - i5-3570K @ 3.40GHz
GPU - GTX 970
RAM - 4x 4GB sticks of I can't recall, but could check if people think it would help
PSU - 650W
MB - ASUStek - P8 Z77-V LE
HDD - x1SSD with OS on it and a standard HDD with all my other files and games on it.
OS - happened both in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 64bit

Event log only ever points to the games .exe file whenever the crashes occur, so I've got no other specific things to go after as far as I know.

Drivers and windows were completely updated along with reformatting.

I feel a bit stuck and was hoping someone could help me track down the source of these crashes. I'm just not sure where to even begin! Please let me know if more information would be helpful and if so, what info in particular.

Thank you in advance to any souls kind enough to help me out!

Thanks for the answer!

PSU - Corsair TX650 (Model 75-001315)
RAM - Kingston 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (Model KVR1333D3N9/4G)

I've just removed two of the sticks. Here's hoping!

Not 100% sure. The system was built by a small company from my hometown. I haven't changed anything but the videocard since I got it.

Also, still having crashes since removing 2 of the sticks :(

With the next tool can you monitor temps,

Download hwinfo32,

http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html

You can open hwinfo32,after that open the sensor window by marking sensors only=V,
after that click run

If you don't check/mark sensors and close the top window, which is the system summary, you can,at the left side, look at "memory",open that and the four modules are shown. If you click one at a time will at the right side been shown data about it,like the manufacturing date, when these differ a lot you probably have mixed sets of ram.

What you can do is raise the Vram in the bios to 1.55V and see if it helps. It can safely go up to 1.65V. What might need to be be done too is raise the voltage for the memory controller, but first see if this helps.I'm assuming here that the ram is the problem.
If temps are the problem can we take a look at that.

When in the bios can you check if XMP is enabled?
