Hi everyone.

I bought a Dell M4700 running Windows7 x64 about 3 years ago with:

NVIDIA K2000M
Intel Core i7-3840QM CPU @ 2.80GHz
SSD 128gb (OS)
750GB HD (storage)

...oh but does something about it bug the hell out of me.

In the beginning, it was great... everything ran smoothly. I updated windows... and everything started... well, its hard to describe, but everything in windows felt a little more 'jerky'. windows didn't open up smoothly, folders didn't close smoothly... new tabs didn't open smoothly in firefox, etc.

I immediately uninstalled all the windows updates. the jerkyness persisted.

I finally got brave and re-installed windows7 from scratch. Once it booted up into windows, everything was fine. Once i started adding software... the jerkiness came back. I hadn't even done one windows update!

I've tried disabling all services and all start-up items. It does something, but not alot. I'm in the process of uninstalling and disability everything that isn't a necessity.... but, then, sometimes, I'll have everything running and it works perfectly. So frustrating.

The only consistent thing is that combofix always gets it to run smoothly. I run combofix, its like a breath of fresh air comes back.... and then i open up a few programs, and the jerkiness comes back little by little.

And its right when combofix starts up... its not a virus. I see that combofix clears out the 'temp' folder first... maybe thats it?

Sometimes installing a new program, or driver causes it to run smoothly.... and then it goes back to jerkiness.

Also, i find that if i run a 'clear ram' program, or make a little shortcut with this command line:
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

.. that also frees up the jerkiness... but again, it always goes back to jerkiness within a minute or two.

Whats wrong with my laptop? :(

Hi,
Try doing a clean boot,
Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press Enter to start the System Configuration utility.
Note If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should type the password or provide confirmation.

On the General tab, click the Selective startup option, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
A screenshot for this step.
On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.A screenshot for this step.
Note This step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.
Click OK, and then click Restart.

NOTE: You will need to restore these settings back after the clean boot.

here you go:

I've also uninstalled my NVIDIA graphics drivers... having disabled everything you asked, and not having the NVIDIA graphics drivers does cause it to go smoother... but of course I need the NVIDIA graphics drivers for photoshop, premiere, etc.

7malligk - just updated to the latest NVIDIA drivers for my K2000M.... and it really didn't do too much.

All i can tell you is when i CCleaner it, or a just clean the Temp folders with TFC... it works perfectly right afterwards... and then within a minute or two, after using firefox, programs, etc, it goes back to being a tad jerky... again, it only LOOKS jerky.. doesn't feel jerky.
