Hi all,

A little while ago my graphics card started presenting with strange issues, at a point the computer stopped booting to windows, so I RMA'd it and the new one arrived last Wednesday. Still I had the same issues, except now it could boot to windows but it booted in 1024x768 and if I moved my Mouse to the left side of the screen it would freeze (mouse and keyboard would stop responding and require a reboot).

I did a fresh clean reinstall of windows and wiped all of my drives because I though maybe windows was the problem at first. It however presented with the same issues as before after the clean install.

I fixed that by just upping the resolution to 1920x1080. So all was good but now I just couldn't install the Display Driver. Basically if I tried to install the Display Driver the computer would blue screen and I would not be able to boot into windows without going into safe mod and removing all the Graphics Drivers for AMD.

Anyway my buddy was up over the weekend with his rig (he is now back in our home town), I was having issues getting my card to work, so we put it into his PC with my PSU and only plugged in his motherboard (Micro ITX) and one hard drive. After boot everything seemed to be operating fine (none of the previously mentioned symptoms) however we discovered we needed to the disc drive to install the Display Driver so we booted down and plugged in the disc drive, after boot the symptoms came back (except the mouse would not freeze the PC when moving it to the left side of the screen, Note: He has Windows 7 and I have 8.1). So we promptly booted down and unplugged the Disk Drive and instead opted to install the driver through an External Hard drive, the Display Driver installed without issue and the Graphics Card displayed correctly in his machine upon reboot, however we did not test it under load.

We then put the Graphics Card (Mine) back in my PC. To try and test the PSU I only plugged in one RAM stick, the CPU, CPU fan, and the boot (OS) hard drive. It again failed to install the driver and it caused a BSOD (same as before). I suspected that my Rig was still using more power, because my motherboard is full (not micro itx) and my processor is an i7 as opposed to his i3. After this he had to leave so we didn't get a chance to test his GPU in my PC, so I still don't know whether it is the PSU or motherboard that is the problem.

The PC runs perfectly without the Graphics Card in, this helps me none because the machine is useless (pretty much) without the GPU.

Side Note 1: BSOD occurs with Blurred Green and Purple Lines and the code is atikmpag.sys, I have already tried all of AMD's suggestions and I know the Card is fine.

Side Note 2: I live in South Africa, here we have a thing called Load Shedding. Load Shedding is basically regularly scheduled power outages in order to conserve power as our infrastructure has grown too fast. I don't use a UPS, so this is the reason I suspect it is probably the PSU, because the power is up and down, surges tend to accompany this sort of behavior.

Edit: Computer Ran perfectly with this setup for 8 months before things started going wrong.

System Specs:

AS Rock Z97 Extreme 4 Motherboard LGA 1150
Intel i7-4770k at 3.5Ghz Turbo to 3.9GHz

You are better to buy the UPS, also from the side note #1, that causes by either GPU or the PSU, because you said the gpu is fine, that means the PSU may not out put consistent power, because the Load Shedding.

Hey there,

Thanks for your response.

I replaced the PSU, and the issue was still present.
I replaced the Motherboard, and the issue is still present.
I clean re-installed Windows 8.1, the issue is still present.
The Graphics Card works in another Computer.

I am at a complete loss as to what it could be.... at this point it is almost a completely new computer.

If anybody has a solution to this problem I would greatly appreciate it.

UPDATE: Different Graphics Card works fine in the Computer, and my Graphics Card works fine in a different Computer.
This is just ridiculously strange. It makes absolutely no sense what so ever... I am running out of things to try.

I switched out back to my original motherboard and the BSOD is no longer Null.sys, but rather dxgmss1.sys.
Also note after viewing the event logs around the time of driver install all it says is that the last shutdown was unexpected.

UPDATE: Windows does not see the graphics card in the Device Manager, that may be because there is no driver installed.
Also note that mouse does not freeze the computer when on left side of the screen in resolution 1024x768 when the graphics card is not plugged into the computer.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: My Buddies machine had windows 7, so I figured maybe it was an OS problem. I installed Windows 7 on my machine and BAM, suddenly the Driver managed to install. However the problems then started to come back. We didn't test it on my buddies machine before for long enough to notice the problems come back. So it looks like it is definitely the Graphics Card. I am in the process of RMA-ing the card now. IF it was indeed a faulty graphics card that I got back after RMA-ing the first time round then I will mark this as a solution. Thanks for all your help anyway!
