Ok first off this is not my device it is my sister in laws laptop. She asked me to update it. So i have tried to do so. here is a list of the problems so far.

1.Windows update just fails to install 5 updates with 3 errors.
First is code 80073712
Second is code 8007002
Third is code 80246007

For it i tried sfc /scannow that returned errors that could not be fixed. I also tried chkdsk /r both did not help. I tried microsoft fix that did nothing.

2.Her windows is showing up at as not genuine. Now problem is its activated fine under my computer properties.

3.Her windows shows as windows 7 home premium. No service pack 1.

Ok i tried i do not know how many programs from microsofts site that is supposed to fix some of these problems it did nothing. This is a lap top a Dell Inspiron N4030. And i have no experience with laptops and especially the Dell brand. I just tried to just install service pack 1 and it is at like 50% been like that almost 2 hours at the time of this post. Just checked it says it failed. The details says :

error:ERROR_sxs_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT(0x80073712)

Now she is not tech savvy at all. I worked on her laptop before and she had no antivirus (i installed one for her) i ran superantispyware (program almost had a heart attack before it was done. And i installed and ran CCleaner. She would like to get this upgraded to windows 10. But to be honest i'd be happy with fixing these errors and getting her up to date.

Please tell me some one here can help me fix this thing as i've been at it 2 days now and almost fed up. So hoping some one here far more knowledgeable then me can help me fix these issues. Please please help.

Yes and there were a few updates microsoft rolled out that had caused this to give false readings. She still has her key unused under her battery pack i wrote it down in hopes of entering it for her. She bought this thing brand new a long time ago. So i have no doubt that it is genuine as the install that came in it. Now if it was indeed not genuine it would give me the option to enter another key to activate the windows fully. It shows perfectly activated though so no option to do this. I did try to use my copy of windows 7 oem 64 to try to repair her install. But mine is service pack 1 and hers is not so not compatible.

She is not tech savvy and had no idea her activation key was even under her battery until i told her lol I do not know how she activated it or used it before other then the problems i am seeing now.

Just checked hers says OA? Or 0A? Like i said before she has no knowledge of pc's she knows how to power on use a browser and install programs but no knowledge of anything outside of those functions lol

What i meant by it being activated is if you right click my computer and choose properties it shows the windows as activated. Yet occassionally a thing pops up saying that it is not genuine. It is just as confusing to me as it is to you. Generally if windows is not genuine when you check the properties you have the option to change the key. But when it is activated that option does not show.

I'm not familiar with all versions of windows. All i know is hers shows as windows home premium 64. And my install disk is oem with service pack 1. And the problems listed above is all i know about her laptop and the problems i am running into.

Error

The product key you entered appears to be for software pre-installed by the device manufacturer. Please contact the device manufacturer for software recovery options.

So apparently they want you to pay another fee to the manufacturer to fix a problem that they created >_< I looked on Dell and could not find a repair for windows. And windows update seems to be the root of the problem.

So there is no other option? Windows broke itself and because of that she has no other option then to purchase a recovery/install disk? And the key she has is useless? And there is no other possible way to fix her windows so that it will update? That doesn't sound right at all.

sound like the os files are corrupted. The key still works, you just need the disk, unless she make the recovery disk. and no matter where, you will need to buy a recovery disk, might just as well go to the source(dell).

what updates are failing?

There are 7 important updates failing.

1.KB2538242
2.KB2976759
3.KB3004469
4.KB3046480
5.KB976932
6.KB2434419
7.KB2538243

1 of them is in fact service pack 1. It is the updates failing that is the problem. And i keep running windows update and all of these are failing. Also i do not think she had ever ran the updater before. When i first went to update it for her she had like 92 updates needing to be installed.

Have you tried this tool? https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/947821

Also please for the sake of sakeness, D/L Kaspersky internet security, Boot the laptop into safe mode and run a full system scan as well as a root-kit scan.
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/free-trials/internet-security

Next, when booting you can usually enter the partition recovery (generally F12 on Dells). This generally has tools available to repair your system.

OR

You don't need a recovery disk because the image for Win7 is available to download from MS Website.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7
All you need is a valid product code.
Use this to make any repairs that may be needed or just back-up your data and do a fresh install.

FYI - if there is no optical drive you can pu the image onto a USB stick using this tool, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

System update readiness tool does nothing (ran it 6 times). And it has Avira installed and it has been ran. And ran in safe mode as well. And if you have a system with windows already installed microsoft refers you to the manufacturer when you use the key from it to try to get a download.

And i tried f12 all it tests is the hardware such as memory and such and that all passed. The problem seems to be with or within windows.

Ah yeah because its OEM. So only option is to contact DELL for a recovery disk then. As for F12 that may not be correct then, try F8. It should take you to the Advanced Boot Options menu where you can reinstall Win7 using the manufacturers recovery partition.
Other than this, if its a problem with Windows, there isn't a lot you can do without turning to underhanded methods.

F8 did nothing at all. It seems to be some thing wrong in windows update files but i can not seem to pin point it. When it says windows is not genuine error code 0x004fe21 pops up at the bottom if that can maybe help you to help me pinpoint the problem i hope so. I tried doing a windows upgrade that is meant to fix this kind of problem but is says the key that came with it does not work with it. Tried the programs under dell meant to fix things with no help. I'd hate to tell her i can't fix it and definitely hate to tell her she needs to buy a recovery disk to fix it. Is there no one here at all with knowledge of windows at all under the windows forums?
