Does Integrated Graphics Lower Processing Performance?

I am about to build a gaming PC, and would like to have a dual monitor setup (1 dedicated for games, and one for other stuff). Which would give me better performance:

1. Use a GPU for both monitors, or;

2. Use my GPU for gaming, and my integrated graphics for my misc. screen? Would the use of the integrated graphics reduce CPU performance more than using 2 monitors with one graphics card?

The GPU uses different units for 2d work and 3d work, thus using a separate GPU for only 2d would make no difference. As skit pointed out, you will not lose performance using a single GPU to feed 2 monitors for 2d work and only 1 for gaming.

The performance difference between either option is negligible, if used for light office work, websurfing etc. For some programs (for example photoshop) a dedicated GPU will perform better than an integrated GPU. For better quality and uniformity I would connect both monitors to the same dedicated GPU so on both screen (when not gaming) you will have the same resolution, colors, extended desktop, etc. In fact I would disable the integrated GPU completely when using a dedicated GPU.

What if i bought a cheap (very cheap) dedicated GPU for my MISC screen. That screen doesn't have to look great, I'm happy with 720p, but I would like the best performance I can get on my gaming screen. Can I use two graphics cards and have the same gaming performance as if I had 1 screen?

Matt what you ask is to SLI two graphics card. In that position, they work together. But every game needs to be programmed to use multiple cards and entry level graphics cards can't be SLI together, at least not with Nvidia.

You won't lose any gaming performance by having a 2nd monitor hooked up to your only GPU. I get the same numbers in gaming and benchmarks with my 2nd monitor hooked to my GTX 770 as I do, when it isn't hooked up to my GTX 770.
