Did my HDD die?

Hey,
I bought this laptop from Amazon at the start of summer, so it's new (Acer VN7-791G if it matters). I also bought SSD and put it in laptop and reinstalled windows 8.1 on SSD. At first, everything was working great, but with time, HDD started to become more and more retarded. There were times when it would just make continous "click" noise (for a couple of seconds), in which time I could not access to data on it. I was ok with this minor issue though (didnt want to send it back to Amazon because I believe I allready broke waranty by adding SSD).

With time, it became more and more retarded. Last few days it would take a couple of seconds to access files on it.

Today, it just dissappeared. There is no D: drive anymore (I had C: for SSD and D: for HDD drive, no partitions.) In "disk management" it doesnt show up, even after using "rescan disks". In "device manager" under "disk drives" I only see driver for SSD.

Maybe I allready answered myself in tread's title, but did my HDD die? Is there anything I can do to completely check if it's true? I'm thinking of going to BIOS and checking there, but other than that, I don't know what to do.

Hopefully I provided enough info. If not, feel free to ask.
Cheers,
ValeV

Hey there, ValeV!

This seems like a pretty unfortunate situation. The best way to determine whether or not the HDD is dying is to test it using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool. You should check the HDD official website for it. This utility monitors the health and SMART status of the hard drive, and it will let you know if there are any bad sectors or other failing SMART attributes. If you cannot find the software, you can check this thread from the community with some third-party suggestions: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

I'd strongly recommend you to back up any data you have on the HDD before proceeding with the troubleshooting!

Open the back of the laptop up (has a small cover at the back).Check if the hard drive is securely in place.

Proceed to check the bios if it is showing up in there. If not, unfortunately your drive has now died. The clicking sounds are a telltale sign that a drive failure is imminent.

Only solution is to replace the HDD. Drives are known to last for a couple days (if unlucky) or even 8 years are a time. Unless you dropped the HDD or laptop really hard somewhere it could've also damaged the components of the HDD.

Edit:You can check the health of all hard drives using crystaldiskinfo http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html
