Strange PC problems possibly caused by PSU

Hello all,

I recently built a rig for my friend (~2 weeks ago) and it was going fine until today. I was told that none of his USB ports were working after a restart. I immediately asked him if he'd installed anything immediately before the issue started and while he thought he had installed the newest Nvidia driver, I later realized he had only downloaded the drivers.

Anyway, after quite a lot of troubleshooting I came to the conclusion that the problem must stem from the PSU because not only had the computer started itself twice without anything or anyone touching it since I first put the rig together (first when I was finishing building it and second tonight during troubleshooting) but also because once the computer launched into Windows from boot, or even after going through BIOS menu, all USB devices lost power. The strange thing to me is that randomly whenever I would reboot the computer, all of the USB devices would work perfectly fine but they would only work if they worked from boot, they wouldn't suddenly work.

The only other conclusion I could draw is that somehow the south bridge had been messed up somehow because I've read that SB problems can cause USB ports to lose power.

If I can't get something figured out here in the next few days I suppose I'll RMA the PSU and hope the new one doesn't go out.

I highly doubt the PSU is at fault. I think you're looking at a motherboard problem here. Check the temperature of the different parts of the board with the back of your hand (north/south bridge especially) when the problem occurs.

So far as I know he never gets over 60c during games like Dark Souls 2. It has a resting temp of 41c. I used the case and motherboard with a similar fx-6300 cpu for almost 2 years without issue. No idea what could cause the motherboard to have any issues as I never overclocked it and never left it on for long.
