Hi Everybody

A friend gave me a laptop which had stopped working (Dell Inspiron 1525) . Says that if I can fix then it's mine.

When I powered it up it failed to boot giving an error message saying the registry was corrupted.

So I thought I should just install a new OS. I had an old copy of 98 lying around so I tried and
everything seemed to be going fine with the install until I got "Error Message: Insufficient Memory
to Initialize Windows".

After a little searching I found:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/184447

It says:

"For Windows 98, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Startup menu appears, and then choose Command Prompt Only.
Change to the folder into which you are attempting to install Windows.
Edit the System.ini file. To do so, type edit system.ini, and then press ENTER.
Add the following line in the [386Enh] section of the file

MaxPhysPage=30000

Save the file, and then restart your computer. Windows Setup should continue. "

Now I should point out this is all totally new to me.

I type "edit system.ini" and get to the blue screen np. However I don't know how to do anything from this screen (that is how to go about editing anything). The mouse pointer doesn't work and F1 help isn't much.

I'd appreciate if someone could explain how to implement this fix.

You don't need to type "edit", just "system.ini" should be enough.

It opens in notepad, so just look for [386Enh] And in that section, add MaxPhysPage=30000 at the end of that section. Be sure to hit enter afterwards to leave a space before the next section. Save and exit.
