I would like to use a 4k TV as a monitor and I have read enough to be confused but not enough to understand which graphics card(s) would be well/best suited for my needs. Most of the discussion forums are related to gaming performance which is not especially relevant in my case as I will be using it for office related tasks (never gaming). From what I understand, text will not look good if I do not use 4:4:4 chroma and 60hz appears to be highly recommended if not required. Are the GTX 960/970/980 cards the only options. I also saw a GTX 950 available - would that support my needs? Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

most any card will support 4k resolution for your purposes. only in gaming are the super cards needed for quality 4k fps. you can use just about anything depending on your budget. something like the gtx 950 or r9-380 would be ample power to push a 4k screen for office work. these would even be more than needed but are not badly priced.

most suggest the nvidia cards due to their low power consumption and heat production. so a gtx 950/960 usually gets suggested over an r9-280/380. the power usage for the nvidia cards is literally half the amd usage!!

if you already have the office pc and need to upgrade it, then likely the psu is very low wattage and can't support much of a card. in this case something like a 750 ti is very low power yet will push a 4k screen as well.

i am assuming he already has an office pc he wants to use. why i suggested a cheap gpu.

but heck yah if he is building it now, then by all means the igp is plenty for non gaming uses and can save some dough as well. guess a bit of clarification would be useful here....

Thank you for the guidance. I do have an existing PC but I am always happy for an excuse to build a new one. Are there motherboards that support HDMI 2.0? The TV does not have displayport unfortunately, so it is my understanding that I need 2.0 for full 4k 4:4:4 at 60hz. That is how I initially started looking at the GTX 9x0 series.

Thanks again.

i'm sure there are some mobo's that include hdmi 2.0. i have never looked for one but there are bound to be there.

you do need 2.0 to get 60 hz at 4k but it is not really needed for general office work. you also need to ensure your tv has 2.0 slot as well. many of the first gen ones and cheaper second gen 4k tv's still do not have 2.0 on it to save cost.

i don't see any filter's for hdmi 2.0 on the major sites but if you spend some time in the specs of newer mobo models you may find one that fits the bill.
