I'm trying to build a 3D rendering machine with dual graphics cards for fun and do a little gaming now and then.
which is better for 3d rendering? crossfire x or SLI? I'm new to this not sure what is different about these. different vendors I'm guessing. like ATI vs NVIDIA. I already have the radeon 5970 2 gb graphics card so I guess I am going with ATI here since I'm sure the two cards need to match.

Solution
well...I haven't heard that named used in over 5 years lol. Anyways It seems the program has a CUDA option instead of CPU rendering so you will want nvidia cards. I can't give you more information past that. I'm not sure how much time a second card will cut off, if anything.

This is because I have never used this program personally. I would suggest trying the Bryce Forums

What program are you going to use?

Also before you even answer that basically having it in Crossfire/SLI will not work for mostly all the apps. However having 2 cards (Depending on app) can be used fully.

second up, unless you are rendering out stuff in OpenCL, ATI is worthless. Most apps use CUDA so that narrows it waaay down. Once you say what program you are going to use, it can be easier to determine what you need.

thank you iamacow, I forgot about that forum, lots of great stuff in there.
looks like I bought the wrong gpu.
will my ati NOT help with bryce rendering at ALL?

I wish I had done a little more research before I bought that ati card
always smarter to do extra research before you buy

now I'm trying to decide on a motherboard because my asus board might be a dud.
I want an 1155 chipset for my mobo because I have a celeron that will work with that.

maybe I should put the money into a fast i7 cpu for bryce rendering instead of a GPX950 or a titan.
not sure which would give me faster rendering, I'm going to post on the bryce forum thanks for reminding me about the bryce forum. that's where I will find the answer I seek about rendering speed improvements

I'm still hoping to solve my motherboard issue here in toms and if not, hopefully I will choose a smart replacement for it.

the asrock z77 extreme4 is my top choice at the moment, but now I'm reading all these bad reviews on amazon. 10 percent of the reviews are 1 star. It really is hard to choose a motherboard, I have been very happy with asrock boards in the past, but I think any board can fry out, the asrocks have nice golden caps and quality components.
I just don't want to wind up with a 2nd dead motherboard.

it's fun building these machines though isn't it and nowadays you can build amaazing machines for pretty cheap.
