I am getting a computer that has a 1.5kW PSU powering the whole thing, i obviously want to protect it from surges, i see several options ranging from a heavy duty 50$ surge protector to much more expensive ones around 700$ with 1980 watt power supply, what is it that i actually need ?

I don't understand why you would need such a large PSU, because it won't affect anything. With PSUs, you want quality, not quantity. A high quality PSU will have its own surge protector along with other safety measures to prevent damage to you PC. Now, you don't really need an expensive surge protector for your PC. Any power extension cord will have a basic surge protector on it, which is enough for the PC.
I don't know what type of computer you are getting, but what I stated previously was for a standard household computer, including high-end gaming PCs. If you are getting a server, then you would want to buy a UPS (uninterrupted power supply)
