Okay, so I was really dumb today out of stress and was doing tests. I didn't have the cooler on and tested my board, no hard drive either. touched the power switch prongs with a screw driver and the BIOS came up, showing i have a cpu temp of 88*C, i came back later (30 seconds later) and reset it, and it came up with the "CPU over temp" bios message. I promptly heard the faintest possible "ptss" sound (Hoping it's PSU) before i switched the power off. The whole thing happened in less than 1 minute. What are the chances of me severely damaging the cpu? The cpu never actually went into windows, nor did it load anything but bios, and did not smoulder/smoke, but I'm just scared shi*tless right now.

Solution
In the old days you could burn a cpu in seconds. Poor amd duron newer saw life. You need to get a heatsink and try to boot, then you will know.

I found an old HSF, the CPU is an Intel i5-4590. However, i don't have any thermal paste. Will it short out without thermal paste?

thanks
