Hi.

I could use some suggestions and advice about these graphics cards, GTX 980 Ti 6GB, GTX 980 4GB, R9 390X 8GB. I have decided on a gaming build after getting some really awesome advice here. Its a long overdue PC upgrade. Fyi, I will be gaming on a 21" 1080P monitor and have plans on upgrading to a 1440P monitor very soon. Previously I had decided on getting the 980Ti but it stretches my budget well beyond breaking point so I could really use your expertise on the matter whether 1080P gaming really warrants a 980 Ti ?

Please, refrain from suggesting me a GTX 970. Thank you for your time reading through my post and a heartfelt thanks to all commenters.

The GTX970 will do perfectly fine @1080p but will run into some problems when you try to max out games on your future 1440p screen.
The GTX 980 is (at the moment) to powerfull for just 1080p and a bit to weak for 1440p. It will be good at 1080p in probably a year so it will take the GTX 970s place in the future.
The 980ti is "overkill" for 1080p but will do nice at 1440p.

Maybe you should look into getting a GTX970 and if you run into some problems with your new 1440p screen you could lower the settings a bit for a while and safe up for a second GTX970 to put them into SLI. Because 2 970s will do fine @1440p.

Not sure where to place of the 390x is.

That sounds about right.

The 390x i would say can be placed somewhere between the 980 and 980 ti, it is a great card, especially with the 8gb of vram you probably won't ever actually use except in GTAV, but it gives you that good amount of headroom.

I'm using two 980Ti STRIX to drive surround with three ROG Swifts in 7680x1440p resolution; that's the only reason I could justify getting them. For 1080p a 390/970 is plenty for most games @1080pas long as you don't go crazy with AA on the more demanding ones http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-amd-radeon-r9-390-8gb-review. If you want to max games at higher resolution you're going to need two cards or major compromises on settings in a lot of cases. If you're going to use Nvidia DSR 2160p @1080p or the AMD VSR equivalent then you will need two cards for more demanding titles even @1080p.

Despite your last statement, a GTX 970 is really perfect for 1080p @ 60Hz.

Since you'll be upgrading to 1440p, I'd opt for a 980 Ti. If that's too much money at the time, you could a always purchase a GTX 970 now and then add a second 970 into SLI when your budget allows. That's what I would do in your situation. I've not liked the GTX 980 (non-Ti) since the 980 Ti was released. I just don't think it represents a good value anymore.

R9 Fury is a better value vs the 980; for $540 (about $50 more than the average 980) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B011D7A526/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER you get a card that stomps all over a 980 85% of the time at 1440p http://s1068.photobucket.com/user/loki1944/media/AMD%20VS%20NVIDA_zpszmsk5jfx.png.html.

Also the 390X is a pretty darn good value when you can find them on amazon for $410 and they beat the GTX 980 9/15 times @1080p and 1440p https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/R9_390X_Gaming/14.html.
