I don't know what route would be better. I'm setting up a webpage for a gaming clan and they also want to be able to host their own Minecraft world or any other game. At first I was thinking a VPS, but they aren't good for fps hosting because of their ticks or something along those lines. Should I be going the full dedicated server route then? I'm trying to do this low cost.

It would be close to impossible to even recommend since many times the location of the data centers makes a difference and only you know which is closer to you and any other people you plan to use the server.

I would ask in the forums on the game you plan to play those guys likely know which provider does the best job, many times these companies that are hosting game servers have everything preloaded for you rather than just give you a raw linux os.

You have to read the fine print very carefully. A properly configured VPS where they give you guaranteed service levels should function almost the same as a dedicated server. If there were to take a large server and dedicate real processors to you and dedicate memory and drive space it really isn't all the different.

Pretty much it will come down to you get what you pay for. The super cheap things always have something in the fine print that makes them not as good as they first appear.
