I had 2 msi reference r9 290 4gb cards running in crossfire, I had to RMA one and msi sent me a r9 390x 8gb gaming as a replacement. I know technically the 390X and 290 will work in crossfire even with the memory difference, but will the 290 and it's 4gb memory hamper the 390X's performance enough to warrant me purchasing another 390X even if I oc the 290 to the 390x's speeds?

Solution
I actually sent my r9 280x back and bought a 390x. Two days ago they offered to upgrade me to the 390x. Of course I took it. But now I have to invest in a new psu to crossfire it. But I was very shocked they did that upgrade at all. Very impressed.

If I were you I'd try to rma the r9 290 but if that doesn't work just sell it and keep the 390x. Maybe save up for another one?

Well CCC allows me to enable crossfire with the 390X and 290. There would be no reason why it wouldn't work as you could crossfire a r9 290X with a 290 and the 290X is the same as the 390X. Now I haven't been able to try any Benchmarks or games yet to see how it performs. I think the only issue could be the difference in memory.

I'll download 3d mark, but considering kombustor won't even load the benchmark if crossfire is enabled I don't have my hopes high. Looks like I might have to rma my 290 so they'll send me another 390x

I'm getting around the 11300 range in fire strike. This is actually lower than what I was getting with 2 290s which was about 13500. The crossfire utilization is also strange. I'll get 100% on the 290 (gpu 2) but the 390X rarely goes over 70% and is usually around 50%. The 290 always has the higher utilization.

Yes it gives an increase over 1 390X but the performance is not as good as 2 290's my best guess is that it's due to the 390X having twice the ram crossfire simply does not work correctly. This is coming from someone who watched the utilization of his 2 290s on the logitech keyboard screen like a hawk during games. I should never see gpu 2 (290) at 100% and gpu 1 (390X) at 30% and rarely rise above 50% even in fire strike. Crossfire does work, but not properly, and hopefully MSI can straighten this out for me as I either need them to take my 290 and give me another 390X or take my 390X and give me a 290

No I'm not, but I am going to raise hell till they do. I rma ed my 290 thinking I'd be getting another 290, they knew I had 2 in crossfire, and they sent me a 390X which doesn't work correctly with the 290. They need to do something for me

I'm going to just call msi Tuesday and honestly talk to them and tell them what's happening and that I want them to exchange my 290 for a 390 or 390X and see how it goes, before I even opened the 390X they sent me I called them to make sure it would work correctly in crossfire, as I thought the memory would be an issue. I really think I have a case with them and they should take care of me, if not I will sell my 290 and get a used 390x, or maybe I'll sell the 390X and make me $200

Hey so what happened with this?

The X def doesn't matter on the 290... but maybe the ram does. I have (2) R9 290X and one of them was an unlock (a 290x packaged as a 290 then unlocked by running the 290x bios). Before I unlocked it I had no issue running it in cross-fire.

Also I have run the modified 390 bios floating around for the 290X on one card with the other card running the normal 290X and also tried it with the 290 profile. All worked BUT both cards are 4GB.
