I am building a gaming computer with a $1000 budget (including monitor, peripherals and OS) and I want to be able to overclock it at some point. However, I couldn't find any unlocked i5 processors that weren't well over $200. What is the least expensive unlocked i5 processor (or are there any unlocked quad-core intel cpus for cheaper)? Also, does the Asus H97I-PLUS Mini ITX LGA1150 motherboard support overclocking? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Solution
There are none in that price range, unless you can get a walk-in deal at MicroCenter. Their current price is $199 for an i5 4690K.

That motherboard will not support overclocking of anything other than a G3258 Pentium. I would recommend an ASRock Z97E ITX/ac. It has good power phases for overclocking.
The i5 4460 is the cheapest locked i5 that is current, at least until the locked Skylake i5s become available, it retails for about $179 US I think.

H97 boards do not support overclocking, you need a Z series motherboard eg. Z97 to overclock. You're not likely to find a new unlocked i5 for less than $200 unless you live near a Microcenter or some other retailer that sometimes has really good in store deals. Other than that you'd have to look for a used CPU if you want an unlocked i5 for less than $200.

Mini ITX set-up are usually more expensive then a normal mATX or mid tower system. All the Chipset support overclocking the thing is the manufacturers can only promote the Z chipset models as overclockable and they are easier to OC.

I've never gotten in to the mini-ITX builds I prefer a monster on my desk so if some one tries to steal it they slip a disk trying to lift it and one that makes the street lights dim when I turn it on. If an SCE rep is reading this I'm J/K. ;^D

If you need the good WiFi that comes with mITX, it is about a push with mATX or ATX of similar quality.

I'm an old time gamer so I don't use wireless ethernet to game and I've learned the hard way not to use wireless KB & Mice. Nothing like pissing off 24 raid partners when your guy unexpectedly runs into the boss before everyone is ready. Especially when your the main tank healer, lol.

We're not talking about wireless keyboard and mice, although Bluetooth sound through a home theater system or wireless headset can be good and fun, but 5Ghz wireless internet which can be useful when visiting and in general use. In my house, it would require a 60 foot cable through the living room or a hole in the ceiling to get from the router in the attic to this computer.
