Which would be best for playing recent games and games to come? i5 4690k with GTX 980 ti or i7 4790k with GTX 970. I think the second option would be best as GPUs are easier to upgrade than CPUs. I plan to be playing at 1440p if that matters. I get that if I get the GTX 970 I will have to turn down the eye candy more to maintain that "smooth" fps. I dont know if the i5 4690k is still the best CPU for gaming so any info on that would be great. And Id also love a whoppin GTX 980 ti in my build.

Thanks

CPU are also easy to upgrade . I would pick GTX 980ti and i5 over i7 and GTX 970

and keep in mind that the GTX 970 has only 3.5G and not 4G in real.

the 980 ti has 6G of GDDR5 and thats the way to go if you can pay.

That i5 4690K is still a champion. in gaming, you will not have much if any use of hyper threads adn the i7 will thus not be worthwhile. if you want to record, then get the i7, but as you did not say you intend to, an i5 and a 980ti, will be far superior in gaming.

Well, know that I think of it, CPUs ARE easy to upgrade... Well yeah, I think thats the better choice. But even so, is the i7 4790k gonna offer more than the i5 4690k jn terms of fps and such to justify the price?

There is actually a slight increase in fps with the i7 but it is very minor. (hyper threads are not the only difference as the i7 has a higher core clock by default and more cache) However a gtx 980ti with the i5 will gave much more fps over a i7 and a 970 especially in 1440p. The i5 and 980 ti is a no brainier in my opinion but have you considered sky lake?

Today not much , but in the future if games start to demand 8 threads it will make some difference.

i7 has 8 logical threads. and 4 cores.

With a 1440p monitor believe me and get the 980ti and the i5 4690K
You will get much better performance with that than you will with a i7 and 970
For the future and needing 8 cores not really going to happen their not going to start making games where they could not sell it to over 50% of their customer base because their PC can't run the game.
Watchdogs comes to mind on this they recommended a i7 processor but guess what a i3 runs the game just the same.
The i3 has a whopping 6 FPS difference for 200 bucks less.

Recommended requirements says i7 3700

it is worth it . and no one cares about the ratio ...

there are missing things you will never have in Z97 like

20 lanes of PCIe 3.0 in the chipset

and true M2 PCIe 3.0 NVME SSD whoich is not available on Z97

and the old Haswel cant go more than 32G of DDR3 RAM , the new chip can address 64GB DDR4

and you can have TRUE 3.1 USB because you have enough LANES from chipset.

ETC

all what you looked at was the 64G for gaming ?

I said MANY things ALL the benefits.

and Extra PCIE lanes are needed for ANY PCIe card you want to add later. and NVME SSD are the new SSD they are COOL and they ARE NEEDED and they ARE the NEW SSD to GO

you sound like saying oh oh oh SSD on SATA2 at 300MB/s are far than needed ...

MEH ...

stop giving bad advices ... the guy is paying alot and when you have the MONEY you dont save 100$ and go OLD chips .. it is ONLY 100$ difference.

and USB3.1 is needed for external storage speed .. AGAIN you sound like some one saying USB3 not needed we have USB2

MEH

I have been working with computers for a while sir, I think I know what gets the job done, and what is overkill, an normal Sata SSD is still better than most people have in their computers, and mechanical drives are still good enough. if you do some tuning on a HDD, it goes even faster. you forget that unlike a new motherboard, $100 has uses out side of the Computer world. there are people still, rocking Q6600's who do not feel the need to upgrade. when you have your money go blow it on a Z170 board, I am not going to advise anyone spends anymore than they need to. what benefit does an NVME drive have over a normal SDD in daily use? not much besides a fast boot, you need to really be working with large files to justify getting one.

fast boot ? wow ... ever wanted to load full level in 4 seconds instead of waiting ?

if you want what works fine go back and buy 1990 10M/s SATA1 harddisks they will work too ...

lol let him decide how fast he wants to load games then... 4 seconds per level or 1 minute lol

when a SATA SSD is 500M/s and M2 SSD is 2200M/s and only 40$ difference yes it is inferior .

also 90K IOPS vs 300K IOPS

you dont get it , the IOPS is the big deal

M2 are 300K IOPS , there is no SATA SSD what so ever that can reach above 100K IOPS.

the REAL usage is not sequential it is Random.

when some one can pay for 980ti he will pay 40$ more for 2200MB/s SSD ... :)

you should get a job in sales, If I did not know better I would think you worked for Samsung with all this trying to sell one.

while NVME drives are great, they are pointless unless you deal with large amounts of data, and while you can buy one, it is not a need, and therefore is a waste of money.

The z170 Chipset has neat features, but if you do not need, them, which they are not needed in this case, why bother? the 4690K is a great chip, it is moire than enough for the job, there is no point in hemorrhaging money for features that will not be used to their full potential or anywhere near their potential. if you can justify why one is needed go ahead, but I guarantee you that for gaming, it is plain silly.

if you are that impatient at a loading screen, then you should be doing some self refection to find out what gives you such anxiety.

:) it is not all about NVMe , he can still get the cheaper AHCI 951 and will get 2200M/s read and 150k IOPS for 50$ less :)
