I've read a couple of reviews and benchmarks proving that the Pentium G3258 is a more efficient chip, and even though it has two less cores than the 860K they are more efficient, and in most cases they provide more FPS in a majority of games. Now my problem is the following:

In light of recent events I want to build a small HTPC gaming pc to play WoW and Heroes of the Storm at the best playable settings and average around 60-70 FPS.

I have decided to go with AMD's Athlon X4 860K since it had four cores, thinking at the time that it would have an advantage in most games, because nowadays lots of games utilize all four cores of a CPU.

However given the benchmarks I've seen it seems that the Pentium is a more viable solution. My questions are:

1) Given the types of games I play do I need more than two cores?

2) Has anyone used both CPU's and if yes,can he provide some insight as to how they handle these particular games?

3) If I was gonna get the G3258 with a mini ITX board which is the cheapest option, that supports overclocking and possible future updates(Core i5 perhaps) ?

Here is one direct comparison:

1) A very few games require 4 threads. I don't think your games need more than one or two.
2) You might go to the G3258 owner's club forum. It is very long, but your answers are likely there

3) If a motherboard supports a G3258, it should support multiplier overclocking. All I have researched do.
Any lga1150 motherboard will support any i3/i5/17 upgrade. That is one of the nice things about the G3258 as a starter.
With X4-860K there is No cpu upgrade.

If you are going ITX. plan on using the X16 slot for your graphics card. If you need...

I love small builds. For a HTPC, the case is all important.
What case are you planning on?

Sorry it took me so long to reply but I was in a raid ;)

For the case I was asking people in Tom's Hardware forums which one would be the best for my purpose but I concluded I would be better off with the G3258 rather than the 860K, and probably the Silverstone ML06/07B since I don't have lots of space AND I want to be able to fit my case with the components in a large suitcase cause I travel twice a year,to my home country and back for studies. As for the WiFi I'm definitely using cable cause I hate wireless connections. I was wondering though if the H81 motherboards support overclocking. I thought a read a post a while back that they now do, but I'm not sure. Also does it matter if the motherboard has an x16 slot rather than a 3.0 x16 slot?

I think any lga1150 motherboard that supports the G3258 will let you raise the multiplier.
A inexpensive motherboard that generally does not support overclocking of a "K" may be limited in it's power capability.
But, I would think 4.0 is a good expectation.
Here is one:

All modern graphics cards use a X16 graphics slot.
Some may be 1.0/2.0/3.0, but it does not matter at all except perhaps 2% for the very fastest of cards.
Not to worry there.

I have a G3258 @ 4.5 Ghz and a Phenom II X4 980 BE @ 4.1 Ghz (should be similar in performance to the 860K clock for clock). I also had an FX 6300 @ 4.5 Ghz. The only MMOs I play are WoW and LotRO. I'd take the Pentium for either over the two AMDs. It of course varies from game to game but right now (not a year or two in the future, but right now) the G3258 is better for the majority of games. Win 10 and DX12 are variables that could eventurally tip the scales in the favor of the 860K, but not just yet).

So let's say in six months, after WoW Legion has been released will the Pentium suffer in performance in comparison to the Athlon X4 860K? By that time I would think that both Win 10 and DX12 will be better optimized for all games.

DX12 requires a game developer to implement it.
Not many do, yet.

Then, the advantage is a faster multithreaded path through the graphics driver.
That is not usually the limiting factor in cpu usage for a game.
I do not see a X4-860K as a long term solution. There is no cpu upgrade.
Nor, for that matter is the G3258. But, at least on a lga1150 motherboard you have cpu upgrade options to i3,i5, i7.

Yes that's probably my plan should I need a faster CPU,and the games I play change. So for WoW and HOTS the Pentium will do a fine job right?
