Hello,

Right, I backed up my Windows 8.1 laptop on to an external hard drive. I want to format the laptop HDD from Dynamic to Basic, which I know means I will lose everything, hence the backup. When I format the HDD I want to install Windows 7 as Windows 8.1 has caused so many problems and I don't think my laptop is capable of running it that well. Therefore, I was wondering if it would be possible to restore the files from the backup on to Windows 7? Or how could I do it? I only want the documents if needs be, but would prefer the programmes too, or if anyone has any advice.

Thank you / Diolch yn fawr

You cannot easily downgrade and include programs, file backups are easy enough to do, just copy your files and everything in your user folder (including AppData if you want program configurations kept for after reinstalling.

HOWEVER, if your laptop did not come with Windows 7, chances are that the drivers won't be available from the manufacturer. Even if you do manage to install, Windows 8 is actually better for low powered computers because it's graphics requirements are significantly lower (no Aero UI to bog the system down). You should try fixing your computer first before doing anything drastic, usually slowdowns are caused by malware, improperly set up software, and hardware problems rather than actual OS issues.
