Hi guys,

I am looking to upgrade my HD 7700 1GB card, with a budget of about £200.

I have a 550w PSU, with the following other specs:

AMD FX-4350
8GB DDR3 (2x4GB)
Segate 1TB HDD
ATAPI iHAS124 optical drive
GA-78LMT-S2P Motherboard

The two I'm considering are the 4GB GTX-960 , and the 4GB R9-380.

My questions are; would either be too much for my 550w PSU, and, in light of my other specs, am I aiming a bit too high? Would I just be wasting money and not really notice any huge differences compared to somewhat cheaper cards, such as the GTX950, for instance?

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Cheers all,

I'm afraid a PSU with a single +12V rail rated at a meager 25A is not quite up to "500W" PSU standards. It's what we refer to as a fake 500W. The specs put it more in the 300W-400W category. Too small for either card to run safely.

The total wattage of the PSU is sometimes useless for determining capacity for those kind of devices. You need to check the nameplate on the PSU for the +12V rail(s) amps and watts. Or tell us the make/model so we can search it out.
The R9-380 is slightly faster than the GTX 960 in most games. But it uses a heck of a lot more watts to get there.

Both cards are about the top end for that CPU if you want to avoid noticeable bottleneck. If you had a better motherboard, you couldOC the 4350 and increase its potential.

The PSU is a WIN Power Plus MPS550; together with my other specs, would either card pose an issue in terms of power?

A huge thanks for your advice posted so far. It would certainly seem as though the R9-380 is the superior card in terms of performance though the high power usage would be my concern.
