So a mutual friend is selling me his old ati radeon hd5870 for about 60$. While I game on the more lower end of the spectrum like sc2, lol, dota, etc I want to be able to play more graphically intense games. I was wondering if the purchase would be worth it at that price point. I currently own a GeForce GT630, since I bought my computer a couple years back.

I have seen the graphics card in person and it looks to be in pretty good shape, maybe just a bit of dust cleaning and it would be alright.

Anyone know if that's a good deal or not? Especially since it's a really old model. Would it be better that I just spend a bit extra and go for more recent models like a radeon r7 260x or something of sorts? Is there a chance of the 5870 being outdated in the foreseeable future after my purchase?

Thank you for any answers :)

well if he sells it for $50 it is worth it. but frankly it is a pretty old card, and will be outdated pretty soon, so I might just go and get a newer card like the R7 260X.

I'd consider that a crap deal. I gave away a 2GB 6970 for $20.

A 5870 is really no good for recent games due to the cripplingly small 1GB of RAM it comes with. I wouldn't bother with anything less than a 2GB card, and would absolutely agree with your idea of saving up a bit more to reach the ~$120 range to get something modern and decent.

Thats really not a great deal as everyone else has said, just a note on the 770 I would suggest getting a 4gb modal or looking for another card. I use one and find that I get a good bit of bottlenecking on the more modern games though it is a pretty solid card none the less.
