Dual channel ram in a 4 channel motherboard?

Hello

I might be able to buy my new system with x99 platform
If i can i will choose the GIGABYTE GA-X99-UD4 or the MSI X99A MPOWER

And thoes both support quadchannel but for now i would use the
Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4GB) DDR4 2400MHz CMK8GX4M2A2400C14
That is dual channel but can i buy a second one of this ramkit and make it quadchannel later or i must buy all 4 ram together?

Yes you can just buy two sticks then another two sticks.

HOWEVER, they are NOT guaranteed to work together. While it is rare that 4 sticks of RAM that are identical will not work together, there is still that possibility. The advantage about quad channel kits is that they are guaranteed to work together.

I'm sorry to be asking this but I'm a little confused on how dual and quad channel works. X99 boards have 8 memory slots in total. If I use 4 slots in 4*4 configuration, will that be a dual channel or quad channel?
