Which core is better for gaming an Intel i5 4460 or an AMD FX-8370?

I can get the 8370 for about $290 or the 4460 for $275.

The Cpu boss specs seem to show that the FX is much better performing with higher clock speeds but I have read that Intel cores can do more per cycle so which is actually better? I am new at computer building.

I could also consider an FX-8350 which I can get for about $250. If you have any other better recommendations that would be great. My budget is around $800-$1000 but I live in Australia so things are a little pricey. (My prices based off newegg)

Thanks

The i5 4460 is the much better gaming CPU, as Intel cores can get a lot more work done per clock cycle, making them almost twice as fast as AMD's cores. Games still aren't really scaling beyond 4 cores, and even on the rare titles that do scale beyond 4 cores, the 8 core FX CPUs still get beaten out by i5s. Outside of video editing and other very heavily threaded tasks that can be highly parallelized, the 8 core FX CPUs simply aren't competitive performance wise with a quad core Intel CPU.

The FX CPU also has the drawback of being rather power hungry, and you can't cheap out on the motherboard if you get one. The lower end AMD motherboards have weak VRMs that can't handle the higher power draw of the 8 core FX chips, leading to throttling. Intel doesn't have this problem, partly because on the 4th generation CPUs the CPU VRM is integrated onto the CPU rather than being on the motherboard.

Thats not really true. The FX 8350 if you get a good binned one has plenty of overclocking potential. The FX 9590 is a very similar CPU to the FX 8350 in its intstruction sets except its core clocks are higher. Here's a link where they put the FX 9590 up against an intel i7 4960x (intel extreme cpu that was worth $1000 plus)

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/170023-amd-vs-intel-the-ultimate-gaming-showdown-5ghz-fx-9590-vs-i7-4960x

Now the 9590 didnt win on the majority of bench marks but it held it's own.

The FX 8370 with the right cooling solution can easily go up to 4.7ghz and maybe even 5.0ghz. The 4460 would be absolutely no comparison to that.

Sure intel's are going to have better power consumption and they do tend to be slot it in and off you go, where as often AMD you have to tweak to find the sweet spot and board manufacturers can be questionable. Yet especially with upcoming DX 12 and AMD'S work with console software developers... an 8370 has the potential to rock the socks off a 4460, now and into the future.

Id like to add that people still seem to be going by the 'intel cores are twice as fast' addage. A core is only as quick or efficient as the software its running allows it to be. Software Developers have been slow to write their code to take advantage of AMD'S architecture as the AMD market has always been smaller than intel and for developers in the past to redevelop and program code that took advantage of a small percentage of the market wasnt cost effective. But times have been changing and many core computing is what software developers WILL have to program for. How much that will have an effect on the current tech is yet to be seen, but the twice as fast theory I I think is of the past.
