PC freezing every 1 or 2 days at random. Help!

■ First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong category. It seemed to be the best fit.

So this started happening within this week or so. Every one or two days everything would freeze. Keyboard and mouse stop working, and all sound stops, and I have to do a force shut down. It appears to be completely random as well. It could happen if I'm playing game or on the desktop.

So, a few things. I doubt it's the CPU, since I very recently put on new paste and it only goes up to around 55° on full load. (And yes, it was freezing before this as well). I also ran the Memory Diagnostics Tool and it came up with no errors.

What's most worrying is that, apart from the RAM, all of my parts are relatively new, having bought them all within this year. These are the specs:

CPU: Intel i7 3770
GPU: Nvidia GTX 970 (Palit Jetstream)
RAM: DDR3 8GB
MB: ASUS P8H77-V LE
Hard Drive: 1TB HDD
PSU: Corsair 750w
Monitor: Acer S240HLBID
OS: Windows 10

Any advice on narrowing this down would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

The parts were new when I bought them, not used. I don't get what you mean by "which corsair" or "which ram".

I got Windows 10 around the time it was released, and like I said it only started doing this about a week ago.

Hard to say where the problem is but you may want to check the hard drive for problems. All those symptoms can occur from a faulty hard drive. Hard Disk Sentinel is a great tool for checking the health of hard drives and a trial version of that software can be downloaded from the Internet. There may be other such programs available totally free from Cnet.com's download section, too.

If your computer was mine, and I suspected the hard drive, I would replace it with a good SSD and use the hard drive as a slave drive. My old 2009 model Dell XPS i7 940 computer runs only on a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD. No mechanical hard drive at all.

Anyway, that is where I would look. Seems you've checked the RAM and that's not the problem. The hard drive is your most physical mechanical component and it's ability to read and write would affect all aspects of your computing experience.

If not the hard drive, then look to Windows 10 next. Driver issues are a problem with some hardware, like GPUs, and Windows 10.

One other thing. If you've had your computer for a few years now, make certain there is no dust buildup in the computer, and also in your power supply. Clearing them both of dust is an easy way to eliminate that as a possible reason for your problems (electrical shorts).

Thanks for the reply. Sorry it took me a while to get back to you.

I downloaded and ran Hard Disk Sentinel, and it says performance and health are at 100%. So I guess it's all good! I don't imagine dust is a problem, since I put a hoover to it every week.

Looks like Windows 10 is most likely the problem, which I did suspect, since it's still relatively new. Luckily, it's actually been freezing less frequently, about once a week now. Hopefully it will be solved as we get more updates.

Good. If you haven't, you might want to check Device Manager to see that all devices are running properly. I suspect Windows 10, too, as the real problem. And new updates are likely to solve the problem, as you said...
