Why does my GPU run hotter on some games?

I have noticed after using a GTX 760,then the 780ti and now a 980 classified
that certain games make the gpu run a lot higher in temps than others?
For example Far cry 4 runs a lot hotter than tomb raider?
tomb raider has just as good graphics but seems like it does not stress the card as much?
Is it the way they optimize these games for PC?
and lastly what is the MAX safe temp i can run my classified at?

Solution
It's totally normal. All about optimization and the engine the game is running on. Max safe temps are around 86c on Nvidia cards. Normally they stop going higher at 82c. It only starts to get "dangerous" at 90-95c but the card will throttle itself or crash the game when it reaches these temps.

Oh i see thats exactly what i wanted to know, so if my games are under 85c i am fine?
Ps, the GTX 980 classified is a very overclocked card right out of the box(1493mhz core clock) so i guess it runs hotter than other 980's as well?
thanks for the help:)
